Prior to the 1960s, only trade schools co-existed with universities in the province of Ontario at the post-secondary level, most of which had been established primarily to help veterans reintegrate into society in the post-war years. Loyalist College was founded in 1967 as part of a provincial initiative to create many such institutions to provide career-oriented diploma and certificate courses, as well as continuing education programs to Ontario communities. The name of the college reflects the area's original settlement by United Empire Loyalists.

Originally operated out of a local high school, Loyalist College moved to its present 200-acre (81 ha) campus on Wallbridge-Loyalist Road in 1968. The college operates a satellite campus in Bancroft, Ontario and is associated with First Nations Technical Institute in the Tyendinaga Mohawk Territory reserve.

Accomodation

Accommodations are differentiated or alternative approaches to receiving information, assignment completion, and/or evaluation. They provide equal access to learning opportunities for students with disabilities by “levelling the playing field.” At the post-secondary level, students with disabilities are expected to accomplish the “essential requirements” of their programs. Accommodations are provided in an attempt to minimize or eliminate disadvantages which occur due to disability related factors.

Common classroom accommodations

  • Note-taking Services (Audio recording-for non-confidential recording, peer note-taking)
  • Text to Voice/Voice to Text
  • Sign Language Interpreting Services
  • Use of personal electronic devices: phone, laptop, tablet
  • Reduced course load

Common testing accommodations

  • Extended test time
  • Use of a calculator
  • Use of memory aids
  • Text to voice/Voice to text

It is important to note that accommodations are based on students’ functional limitations and documentation and may not be represented on this list. If you have any questions regarding these accommodations, please contact AccessAbility Services through Student Success.
