Mcgill University, found with a purposeful sense of “questioning the usual”, was established in the year 1821 by the royal charter of King George IV and under the vision of James McGill, the institute’s namesake. Ranked 35th by the QS World University Rankings 2020, the university is the only academic institute of higher education in Canada to be a part of Global University Leaders Forum (GULF). It is also prominently known for producing 12 Nobel laureates and 145 Rhodes Scholars and is often touted as one of the best Canadian universities for the brightest minds across the world.
The university is located in the heart of Montreal (Canada) and had a total strength of 40,153 students in fall 2019. University’s residence system houses more than 3,100 students. Residences are available in the following styles:

The university has a Career Planning Service (CAPS) team which helps students in building a CV and finding a suitable job whether it is after completion of a degree, summer job, part-time job or internship. However, international students must have a Canadian work-permit to do any kind of job in this country. Application for this permit should be submitted at least 6 months before you are planning to apply for a job.
Scholarships
McGill University is truly committed to lending support to international students with their education and stay in one of the coveted countries for higher studies, Canada. For the academic year 2017-2018, McGill University offered 119M CAD in scholarships, fellowships, and bursaries. Bachelor, Masters, and Doctoral program students are offered various McGill University scholarships in the form of entrance and in-course studentships.
It is one of the few universities in Canada which offers the majority of its scholarships to in-course students and not incoming students. Furthermore, 95% of entrance based McGill University Scholarships are awarded based on the application submitted for admission at McGill University.
Aside from the McGill University scholarships, international students are also eligible for government-based scholarships. This is especially for masters and doctoral students as they are majorly offered McGill in-course scholarships and no entrance scholarships.
McGill University Scholarships for Bachelor Students
To the international students entering a bachelor program at McGill, various entrance scholarship programs are offered by the university. These McGill University Scholarships range from 2,000 CAD to 10,000 CAD.
Incoming students must note that McGill Entrance scholarships are awarded purely on the basis of academic merit (except for Major Entrance scholarship where leadership skills are also considered). An applicant’s financial need is not taken into consideration.

McGill University In-course Scholarships for Bachelor students
At the end of every academic year, each faculty awards a wide range of McGill University Scholarships to their in-course/continuing students. Selections for scholarship awards are based on
- The combined GPA for the Fall and Winter semesters
- Enrolled program’s content
- Number of credits (completion of at least 27 graded credits is a must)

McGill University Scholarships for Masters and Doctoral Students
Graduate funding at McGill University is managed by every academic department individually. Presently, McGill University scholarships, at the masters and doctoral level, are only available in the form of the in-course scholarship program.
McGill Entrance Scholarships are NOT available for incoming graduate students. Except for McGill University International Entrance Scholarship program for incoming MBA Students.
McGill University In-course Scholarships for Masters and Doctoral Students
With almost 200 McGill University scholarships for in-course scholarships, the university tries that each and every master and the doctoral student is rewarded.
To be considered McGill University in-course scholarships at the graduate level, students must fulfill the following eligibility criteria:
- Enrolled in a full-time master or doctoral program at McGill University.
- Excellent academic performance
- Demonstrate financial requirement
- Submit academic progress and funding report
International students who have submitted evidence of financial capacity at the time of the Canadian student visa process will not be considered for the scholarships in their initial 12 months of the program.

External Scholarships accepted at McGill University
It is true that compared to other universities in Canada, the number of scholarships at McGill University is less for incoming international students. However, students who are unable to receive financial aid through McGill University Scholarships can opt for external scholarship programs.
