The Delft University of Technology often referred to as TU Delft, is the oldest and largest technical university in the Netherlands. It was established as a Royal Academy in 1842 to facilitate the education of civil engineers. It is the school that rapidly expanded its education curriculum and became a polytechnic school in 1864.
Later in 1905, it became an institute of technology, gaining full university rights. And, it got its current name in the year 1986. Further, in 2019, the university was ranked amongst the top 20 best universities for engineering and technology internationally and received the highest rank in the Netherlands.
With an area of around 161 hectares, the campus of the university is larger than Delft's city center and is considered one amongst the largest university campuses worldwide. Be it students, visitors, scientists, and employees of the university along with companies, over 27,000 people stay on the university's campus every day. The campus has green spaces along with an extensive network for cycle tracks and walking trails. The campus also serves food for students and visitors.
TU Delft has an extensive framework of external and internal quality assurance for education and research. The BSc and MSc programs are all accredited by the NVAO (the Dutch and Flemish Accreditation Organization), and TU Delft also passed its institutional audit on quality assurance.
The education system of TU Delft is segregated into three levels; bachelor’s, master’s, and doctorate, since 2004. It offers 16 bachelors and around 33 master programs. Some of these degree programs are offered in conjunction with other higher education institutions, under the auspices of either the 4TU Federation (the collaborative venture of the four Dutch universities of technology) or our alliance with Leiden University and Erasmus University Rotterdam (LDE). Also, the university houses Science Center Delft, which shows scientific innovations that are developed at the TU Delft and gives visitors an insight into the process of scientific research. The Science Center Delft gives students and scientists of the TU Delft the opportunity to present their research to the general public. It is also home to several smaller research institutes.
