The University College Dublin (UCD) was established in the year 1854 and has emerged as the #1 University in Ireland for education, sport, student welfare, research, and global connections, respectively. Originally founded as the Catholic University of Ireland, the institute became UCD in 1908. The university has produced many major figures and continues to do so. Its best known graduates include the famous writer James Joyce who completed his BA in 1902.
