The Technical University of Munich is amongst the best universities in Europe having four campuses in Bavaria: Munich, Garching, Weihenstephan, and Straubing. In 1868, it was initiated by King Ludwig II. The university has a partnership with TU9 which is an integrated society of the most dignified German Institutes of Technology. TUM ranks fourth among the European Most Innovative University by Reuters 2017.
The academic faculties of the university are divided into four campuses. The main campus is in Munich is spread in the three regional site includes the departments of Architecture, Information Technology and Electrical Engineering, Business School and Medical Hospitals. The second campus is situated in Garching which houses faculties of Chemistry, Physics, Mechanical Engineering, Informatics, and Mathematics.
The third campus is situated in Weihenstephan which is just 35 km north of Munich that is home to the School of Life Science. The last campus is in Straubing which is the home of Biotechnology and Sustainability. Moreover, TUM founded German University of Science and Technology in Singapore.
As of 2019, TUM has over 42,700 students in it's graduate and undergraduate programs out of which 13,858 are international students. It manages a faculty of 10,829 staff members and 594 professors. Its academics are divided into 15 departments and 13 research centres. University secures 358 Million Euros in 2018 for research. University has registered 66 patents and 178 inventions were made by scientists from TUM in 2017 as a result of their research work.

Details for off-campus
- Accommodations type include Student residence halls and Apartments
- Student residencies have limited space and wait times are generally between one and five semesters
- The average monthly rent for a single student dorm in Munich is around 280 Euro
- Types of accommodation include Single Room, Shared Apartment, Single Apartment, Couple Apartment, Single-Parent Household and Apartment or single room in a housing community for the disabled (with suitable appliances)
- Only around 13% students live in student residences due to limited space
- Majority of the students in Munich live in private rooms/apartments
- The average cost per month of such a private living situation is between 400-650 EUR, depending on the location
- The rent is due and payable monthly in advance by the eighth workday of the month
Scholarships
- TUM provides scholarships (€ 500 – € 1500 per semester) for international students enrolled in undergraduate or graduate programs with a good academic record and proven financial need.
- Deutschlandstipendium or Germany Scholarship awards students with € 300 per month for candidates who demonstrate academic achievement, social engagement, and a sense of social responsibility.
- The Oskar Karl Forster scholarship provides students with the necessary funds to buy books and other study materials. Available to undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral students with proven need and academically outstanding performance, the maximum limit for the scholarship is € 1400 per month (for doctoral students).
- Graduate students of the School of Mechanical Engineering with extra-ordinary academic performance are eligible for a scholarship of up to € 550 per month.
- The Nicolaus Scholarship Fund is available for students who have completed 2 years of study at TUM, and demonstrate financial need.
There are several other scholarship and funding resources for international students at TMU. In addition, students can also choose to work. TUM job portal has more than 3,000 jobs that the students can choose from.
