The Free University of Berlin was established in 1948 by the students and professors. The initiative was to incorporate a free university and was strongly supported by the masses and gained plenty of financial aid. Currently, the university has 12 academic departments, four multi-disciplinary central institutes, and one merged medical school with the Humboldt University of Berlin. The university holds membership in various prestigious international and national organizations like the European Universities Association (EUA) and Network of Universities from the Capitals of Europe (UNICA).
The Free University of Berlin has four major campuses. Located in the south-western of Berlin, Dahlem Campus is home to several departments like humanities, social science, history, law, business, economics, political sciences, biology, chemistry, and physics. The campus also houses 106-acre large Botanical Garden and John F. Kennedy Institute for North American Studies. The Lankwitz Campus comprises the Institute of Geographical Sciences, Institute of Meteorology, Institute of Geological Sciences, and the Institute for Space Sciences. The campus also has university archives. Duppel Campus houses most of the auxiliary divisions of the Veterinary Medicine Department. Located in Steglitz, Benjamin Franklin Campus is the merged medicine department of the Humboldt University of Berlin and the Free University of Berlin.
The university offers 52 doctoral, 105 graduate, and 73 undergraduate degree programs in various fields like social sciences, biology, chemistry, physics, chemistry, medicine, pharmacy, mathematics, languages, cultural studies, law, economics, business, and arts. The university is home to over 31,500 students, and over 4,500 staff members. It is counted among the topinternational universities for the high population of international students and teachers. The university also has collaborations with numerous international organizations and institutions from various countries like France, India, Turkey, Belgium, Croatia, Hungary, Great Britain, Netherlands, Russia, etc. It provides the students with outstanding internship and job opportunities through the tie-ups it has developed with well-established firms over the years.
The university is associated with many notable alumni belonging to various fields. Shoucheng Zhang was a successful physicist known for his work on topological insulators. Jürgen Kocka was a well-known German historian. Klaus Wowereit was Berlin's former mayor. Hartmut Zinser is a successful German religious studies scholar. Michael Stürmer is a German historian popular for his part in the 1980s Historikerstreit. Wolfgang Becker is a famous German film director. Ingeborg Gräßle is a Member of the Parliament of Europe. Michael Roes is a German filmmaker and writer. Mario Laserna Pinzón is the founder of Bogotá's Los Andes University.

- Most of the off-campus housing is managed by Studentenwerk Berlin (state-run non-profit organization for student affairs in Germany)
- All the halls are close to one or another university in the city

Free University of Berlin takes part in the European Career Fair, apart from the other career fairs across Berlin and Germany. Stellenticket Freie Universität Berlin is the job portal where students can look for a position that suits one’s interest and qualifications.
International Career service is also provided at the university to hone the skills of students who wish to work abroad. Free University of Berlin also posts vacancies for professorships, academic and non-academic staff. These vacancies are also available on university job portal and students with the desired credentials can apply for the same.
Students placed in the Financial Services sector have bagged the highest package which can range from 1,00,000 EUR-1,45,000 EUR. As per educational degree, Master of Science pass outs have proved the most successful.
Scholarships
- Free University of Berlin does not offer scholarships in Germany for international students on its own, but does associate with the Center for International Cooperation (CIC) that bridges this gap. Short time financial assistance is provided to maintain international associations.
- German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) offers scholarships every year for Russian Federation. These can be availed by students pursuing language courses, masters and doctoral programs, and academic internships.
- German Research Organizations, like DFG, FhG, MPG, etc. also offer grants for research projects or individual researchers.
- The Library of John F. Kennedy institute offers grants to multiple students every year from its impressive collections. Advanced scholars and Ph.D. candidates can avail this scholarship.
