Western Sydney University is an Australian multi-campus university in the Greater Western region of Sydney, Australia. Founded in 1989 as a federated network university with an amalgamation between the Nepean College of Advanced Education and the Hawkesbury Agricultural College.
In 2021, it was ranked in the top 300 in the world and 18th in Australia in the Times Higher Education World University Rankings.
The Western Sydney University is made up of six campuses which are Bankstown, Blacktown, Campbelltown, Parramatta, Penrith, Hawkesbury. Each campus hosts its own unique array of courses, of which different units can be completed across multiple campuses.
The winner of the 2007 Miles Franklin Literary Award, Alexis Wright, was a UWS Postdoctoral Research Fellow in 2010.
In 2011, author Anita Heiss was Adjunct Associate Professor at the university, attached to the Badanami Centre for Indigenous Education.
Award-winning Australian author Gail Jones was a professor in the university's Writing and Society Research Centre as of 2019.
Western Sydney University was ranked 26th in Australia in 2020 according to the QS World University Rankings.
Western Sydney University has on-campus accommodation in the form of the UWS Village located adjacent to its Parramatta Campus. The village was opened in February 2009, providing apartments from one to eight bedrooms. At the time of opening, the village was the third Campus Living Villages property to be established in Sydney after the Macquarie University Village and the Sydney University Village.
The university offers undergraduate, postgraduate and doctoral programmes in various lucrative fields such as law, medicine, social sciences, psychology, humanities and business. The institution also facilitates online education with courses available on its official website. Western Sydney University is a closely-knit community of diverse cultures and ethnicities represented by about 48,500 students from more than 70 countries of the world. The total undergraduate enrolment at the university is 38,827 while 7,123 students are pursuing postgraduate degrees. At present, the university has about 1,675 academic and 1,712 administrative staff members on the roll.
