Established in the year 1969, the University of Prince Edward Island is a government university offering a range of degrees at undergraduate, graduate and doctoral levels. This university's history is closely connected with its founding institutions, namely Prince of Wales College and St. Dunstan's University. In the year 1969, this university welcomed its first batch of students, followed by the coalition of its founding members. As the university started to expand its academic curriculum, new faculties and schools, such as the Veterinary Medicine faculty and the Nursing school were added to it.

Nestled in the capital of Prince Edward Island City, Charlottetown, the university's campus has many amenities for its students. These amenities include dining halls, sports centers, daycare centers, science centers, libraries, and student centers. Students can utilize the benefits of on-campus accommodation and parking spaces. Several of the university's buildings have been named after staff, students and members who have significantly added to its success. The UPEI Health and Wellness Center aims to provide the students with high-quality health care to promote a healthy campus and community. Additionally, The Robertson Library has various educational resources for the students.

In the academic year of 2018-2019, the university experienced an increase in student enrolment compared to the previous academic year. The student's enrolment for undergraduate courses in the same year was 4,208 and the postgraduate enrolment was 461. Both enrolments had a hike of 2.1% and 8.0%, respectively. The University of Prince Edward Island welcomes international students across the world, and in 2018, the total international student enrolment was 1,164. In the year 2017-2018, the average class size was 25, and the student to faculty ratio measured up to be 16:1. In the same year, the university received a research income of $12.9 Million.
