Program Description

The degree course in “Occupational Therapy ” trains future health workers.
The main objective of the course is to train students to become professional health workers, specializing in Rehabilitation.
Graduates have to know how use specific skills and knowledge to carry out, with professional autonomy, activities in Occupational Therapy for both individuals and the community, as well as activities aimed at prevention, treatment, rehabilitation and functional assessment procedures, for subjects suffering from diseases and physical and mental disorders, both temporary and permanent, by using expressive, manual – representative, recreational activities, in accordance with the provisions concerning the identification of figures and the related professional profiles defined by the Ministry of Health’s decree.
Graduates of Occupational Therapy can perform a functional and psychological assessment of subjects and develop the definition of the rehabilitation program, with reference to the diagnosis and prescriptions of the doctor, aimed at identifying and overcoming the needs of the disabled person and their journey towards personal autonomy in daily life environment and in a social context, in collaboration with a team of socio-health figures. Graduates are equipped with an adequate preparation in the basic disciplines, in order to allow them to better understand the most relevant elements underlying the pathological processes on which their rehabilitative and/or therapeutic intervention in the developmental, adult and geriatric age is focused.
The degree program aims to provide a university-level training characterized by an overview of the various issues related to Occupational Therapy both in physiological and pathological conditions.
To this end, the training program provides the acquisition of a solid scientific basis for interventions aimed at prevention and therapy.
The course is divided into six semesters for a total of 180 credits.
In the first semester, in order to guarantee a solid basic preparation and an interdisciplinary methodology, common courses are given in the third class of medical degrees.
Subsequently, the specific characterizing subjects of the profession and the related integrative subjects are discussed.
The occupational therapist must be able to demonstrate a systematic understanding of the key aspects of all the disciplines underlying Occupational Therapy.
These objectives are achieved through theoretical practical training organized in lectures, interactive lessons (simulations and discussions of specific cases), and training activities.
Particular importance, as an integral and qualifying part of vocational training, is placed on the practical training and clinical internship, carried out with at least 60 CFUs under the supervision and guidance of specially assigned professional tutors, coordinated by a teacher belonging to the highest educational level for each specific professional profile and corresponding to the norms defined at European level if required. Under the guidance of the tutor, graduates progressively learn their professional skills until reaching complete independence.

Career opportunities

Graduates in Occupational Therapy  lend their services in social-sanitary facilities, either public or private, day centers, rehabilitation centers and clinics, nursing homes or institutions for chronic diseases, care homes, home service, schools and all structures dealing with prevention.
The employment relationship can be either as an employee or freelancer.
Since this professional figure is often placed within a multidisciplinary team, the collaboration with other professionals and more generally with those who are part of the Individual Rehabilitation Project (PRI) is envisaged.
