Program Description

The master’s degree program in “Economic Development and International Relations” (SERI) belongs to the International Relations department, and offers multidisciplinary training essential for the analysis and interpretation of economic, political and social phenomena of international dimensions.
Together with a solid economic preparation, the multidisciplinary approach of the SERI Master’s course intends to provide a broad and up-to-date view of the complex and dynamic international reality, also referring to the tradition of internationalist studies that has historically characterized the University of Pavia.
The disciplinary areas – economics, statistics, law, political and social sciences, history, languages – that contribute to SERI training are the expression of the different dynamics that interact in the international system and different methodological approaches through which the world is studied and interpreted.
In addition to the advanced teaching of English, the course offers also classes in French, Spanish, German, Arabic, Chinese and Japanese.
Deepening knowledge of the various dimensions and components of the international reality, SERI focuses on the study of the economic-institutional and historical-political issues that accompany globalization and the transformation of international structures.
Among the topics to which particular attention is given we find:
international cooperation and policies for development, analysis of processes and mechanisms of integration in the various regions of the globe, knowledge of relations between industrialized and emerging countries, the study of international organizations, international politics of different subjects of the contemporary world ,and techniques for data analysis.

The multidisciplinary training and the international characterization of the SERI Master course, enriched by linguistic knowledge at a good level of in-depth study (in European and / or extra-European languages), allow graduates to have the necessary skills to become specialists in economic, social and political sciences in intermediate and higher positions within state administrations, international intergovernmental or non-governmental organizations, private companies (either national or multinational) operating in international markets, as well as other public or private organizations with an international projection.
In relation to the specific in-depth analysis offered (both with reference to European issues and those relating to developing countries), the European bodies and the socio-economic organizations and professions as well as governmental and non-governmental organizations active in international development cooperation, and related socio-economic professions.
The preparation acquired on economic, historical, political and juridical issues in the international area as well as the possibility to deepen the knowledge of at least two foreign languages, provide graduates with the basic knowledge required to participate in competitions for a diplomatic career.
Finally, the course provides a useful preparation to continue the studies in view of a position in the field of scientific research in disciplinary areas such as economic disciplines and political or social sciences.
