  • McMaster University offers a Master of Science in Chemistry for a duration of 2 years.
  • It is an online, thesis-based program offered on a full-time basis.
  • This is a research-intensive program of graduate studies that provides a unique combination of hands-on personal mentorship, access to the most advanced instrumentation and research facilities.
  • It provides graduate students with a wide range of chemistry research opportunities and cutting-edge projects across all sub-disciplines of chemistry: organic/polymer, inorganic, physical, theoretical, and analytical.

  • All courses for every first-year Science student will be delivered online for this fall. A limited number of students in their second, third, and fourth years will return to campus for part of the semester.
  • The student-faculty ratio of the program is 12:1.
  • The minimum course requirement for the M.Sc. degree is 4 graduate modules or the equivalent, selected from any of the offered Chemistry modules, 600-level courses (one module credit each), or extra-departmental graduate courses (usually two module credits each).
  • The minimum passing grade for any course in this program is B grade.
  • Graduate students are encouraged to apply for major scholarships awarded at the national (Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council or NSERC) and provincial (Ontario Graduate Scholarships) level.
  • For full-time graduate students during a full academic year (September 1 to August 31), financial support is:
    • a Teaching Assistantship ($11,260 for 260 hours) 
    • a Research Scholarship ($13,250 for M.Sc.)
  • The average salary of the program goes up to 53,000 USD

Eligibility & Entry Requirement

Academic Eligibility:
  • Students have to complete an Honors Bachelor's degree or an equivalent 4-year university degree in Chemistry and other Science courses from a recognized university.
  • Students must have a B+ minimum average grade (or 9/12).
  • Students hold a strong performance in the final year of studies, including good marks in undergraduate research projects.
Indian Student Eligibility: Indian students are eligible to apply if they meet one of the following eligibility criteria:
  • Completed a 4-year UG degree with first class in a relevant field from a recognized institution.
  • Or, completed a 3-year UG degree must have a substantial background in science or a related field.
