Program Description
- Master of Arts in English at York University is offered as a 1-year (3 consecutive terms) program.
- It is an on-campus program offered on both a full-time (funded) and part-time (unfunded) basis.
- The program is consists of coursework or major research paper or thesis.
- Students have to successfully complete the 24 credits for this course.
- In this program, 6 credits maximum may be taken outside of the program in English and 6 credits maximum may be taken as directed reading courses.
- There are three ways of earning a MA degree in English:
- Courses only: greatest exposure to a rich diversity of ideas, literature, and theories. The most amount of practice writing conference and article-length research papers.
- Courses (18 cr) + MRP (6 cr): exposure to diversity with a sustained focus on a critical research topic. The MRP requires an approved proposal, a faculty supervisor, two faculty assessors, and is approximately 60 pages in length.
- Courses (12 cr) + formal Thesis (12 cr):
most focused, but also most formal. The MA Thesis is over 100 pages in length, requires an approved proposal, faculty supervisor, and formal oral defense in front of a committee and external examiner.
- The Graduate Program in English at York University is pleased to offer Canada’s first Graduate Diploma in World Literature, which can be pursued in concert with a student's MA or Ph.D. degree.

Academic Eligibility:
Indian students are eligible to apply if they have any one of the following certificates:
- Students must have an undergraduate honors degree in English or its equivalent from a recognized university.
- A GPA of at least 3.33 (B+ grade) out of 4.33 in English and Humanities courses in the last two years of study is required to be eligible for the program.
Indian students are eligible to apply if they have any one of the following certificates:
- Completed a 4-year UG degree with first class in a relevant field from a recognized institution.
- Or, completed a master's degree with first-class in a relevant field from a recognized institution.
- Or, completed a 3-year UG degree from an accredited institution.
