Program Description

  • Bachelor of Science in Health Studies at York University is offered as a 4-year teaching program.
  • It is an on-campus, honors course offered on a full-time basis.
  • A Health Studies degree provides an excellent comprehensive education plus the prerequisite courses required for medical or other professional schools.
  • Students have to successfully complete the 120 credits for the program.
  • The department offers three-degree options to the students:
    • Bachelor of Health Studies (BHS) Specialized Honours (Health Policy)
    • Bachelor of Health Studies (BHS) Specialized Honours (Health Management)
    • Bachelor of Health Studies (BHS) Specialized Honours (Health Informatics)
  • In this program, students explore health care decision-making and the role of both government and non-government organizations.
  • York’s Health Studies program emphasizes an approach to health that focuses on broader societal issues.
  • Important issues are covered, including the public/private mix in health care, integrated health systems, international health systems, the influence of stakeholder groups such as the pharmaceutical industry, and more.
  • Students can also complete certificates in Health Informatics and Health Services Financial Management which provide students with the opportunity to acquire specialized knowledge and skills in these growing areas.
  • All students, whether in the Specialized Honours options (Management, Informatics or Policy) or the Honours Bachelor of Health Studies option, take the same core courses, including:
    • Foundations of Health Studies
    • Social Determinants of Health
    • Health Policy: Power and Politics
    • Health Care Ethics
    • Health Management I
    • Health Informatics I
    • Statistical Methods in Health Studies
    • Health Care Law
    • Applied Research Approaches in Health Studies
  • Students have an opportunity in their 4th year to get hands-on experience through a field placement in a variety of health care settings in which students are mentored and supported by fieldwork supervisors.
  • Students are encouraged to apply for awards, bursaries, scholarships, and prizes offered by York University. 
  • The average salary of the program goes up to 45,000 USD.

Eligibility & Entry Requirement

Academic Eligibility:
  •  Students must complete an Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) degree.
  •  Students must have to complete the following course such as:
    • English (ENG4U)
    • Five additional 4U or M courses
    • 4U math
  • To gain admission to this program, students’ academic average should be in the high 70s to mid-80s.
Indian Student Eligibility:
  • Students from Grade XII graduation should require 60% to be considered for most programs - a minimum of 5 academic courses.
  • Indian students are eligible to apply if they have any one of the following certificates:
    • All-India Senior School Certificate (AISSCE)
    • Higher Secondary Certificate (HSC)
    • Indian School Certificate (ISC)
    • Intermediate Examination Certificate
    • Pre-University Examination Certificate
  • Students should have an average score in programs and complete prerequisite courses such as physics, biology, chemistry, and mathematics with a grade of 55%.
Along with the minimum eligibility requirements, international students hailing from non-English speaking countries need to prove English proficiency through IELTS/TOEFL/any equivalent test.
