Program Description

  • MA in Theatre at the University of Victoria is offered as a 2-years program by the Department of Theatre.

  • Graduate studies at the Department of Theatre will immerse students in a dynamic academic and research environment, with the support and guidance you need to take your passion to the next level.
  • Students will receive hands-on experience in all areas of theatre, taught by leading scholars and theatre professionals in one of the most innovative teaching facilities in North America.
  • With graduate programs in directing, design/production, theatre history and applied theatre, they offer graduate students the opportunity to work alongside a diverse group of students in small classes and receive close mentorship from internationally renowned artists, scholars, directors, and designers.
  • The MA program consists of a minimum of 15 units.

Eligibility & Entry Requirement

Academic Eligibility:
  • Students must have an undergraduate degree in theatre or its equivalent from a recognized institution.
  • A grade point average of 6.0/9.0 (B+ average) in the work of the last two years (30 units) leading to the bachelor’s degree.
Indian Student Eligibility:
  • Students must complete a Bachelor’s (4 years) degree in theatre or its equivalent from a recognized institution.
  • Or, students completed a master's degree with first-class in a relevant field from a recognized institution.
  • The minimum grade score for a degree should be 7/10 (60%), first class.
Along with the minimum eligibility requirements, international students hailing from non-English speaking countries need to prove English proficiency through IELTS/TOEFL/any equivalent test.

  • Two Letter of Recommendation: Letter of recommendation (combination of professional and academic recommenders) which includes information about the student, their connection with the person they are recommending, their qualification, and the specific skills they have.
  • Statement of Purpose: This statement must describe your qualifications and the objectives of your intended educational program.
  • Statement of Intent: Reasons or intentions for pursuing studies in this program, including a description of prior experience.
  • Official Transcripts: Applicants who have attended and/or received degrees from institutions outside the US must provide certified copies and certified English translations of transcripts or records of all previous post-secondary education and of all degrees conferred.
  • Writing sample:  All students should submit a recently written academic paper. 
  • ELP Scores: Students have to submit their English language proficiency scores like IELTS, TOEFL, or other test scores.
