Program Description

  • MSc in Geography at the University of Victoria is offered as a 2-years program by the Department of Geography. 
  • The University of Victoria also ranked 2nd in Maclean’s top Canadian Comprehensive Universities 2019.
  • Students will work on important issues affecting society today, like conservation and the changing climate’s effect on human systems.
  • UVic’s location on Vancouver Island gives students easy access to marine and alpine ecosystems, freshwater wetlands, rivers, lakes, and a temperate rainforest for fieldwork.
  • This degree is research-focused (i.e., thesis or dissertation option) and is supplemented by nominal coursework designed to build knowledge and enhance research- and career-related skills.
  • The program involves students in coursework and research proposal development in year one, followed by independent research pursuits and thesis writing in year two. 
  • The MSc program consists of a minimum of 19 units.

Eligibility & Entry Requirement

Academic Eligibility:
  • Students must have an undergraduate degree in geography or its equivalent from a recognized institution.
  • A grade point average of 6.0/9.0 (B+ average) in the work of the last two years (30 units) leading to the bachelor’s degree.
Indian Student Eligibility:
  • Students must complete a Bachelor’s (4 years) degree in geography or its equivalent from a recognized institution.
  • Or, students completed a master's degree with first-class in a relevant field from a recognized institution.
  • The minimum grade score for a degree should be 7/10 (60%), first class.
Along with the minimum eligibility requirements, international students hailing from non-English speaking countries need to prove English proficiency through IELTS/TOEFL/any equivalent test.
