Program Description

  • McMaster University offers a Master of Applied Science in Civil Engineering for a duration of 1-2 years.
  • It is an on-campus program offered on both a full-time and part-time basis.
  • The MASc degree is a thesis-based program where students are required to complete courses in addition to writing and defending a thesis.
  • The objective of the program is to strengthen, in some specific areas, the knowledge gained at the undergraduate level, and to provide a significant introduction to research involving original investigation in these areas.
  • This research program requires the completion of the equivalent of 4 half graduate-level courses plus presentation and defense of a thesis embodying results of an original investigation.
  • Students get opportunities to do specialization in the following courses:
    • Bio electrochemical systems
    • Bridge Engineering
    • Construction Data Sensing and Fusion
    • Earthquake Engineering and Structural Dynamics
    • Geotechnical Engineering
    • Intelligent Construction Systems
  • Students will be required to complete two full courses, of which at least one must be from within the Department of Civil Engineering at McMaster University.
  • Additional course work may be prescribed if deemed necessary by the candidate’s research supervisor.
  • All full-time Master’s students must attend and participate in the Department of Civil Engineering Graduate Student Seminar Day each year, for the first 6 terms (24 months) of study. 
  • This program is intended mainly for full-time candidates but may be taken on a part-time basis.
  • MASc also consists of a co-op program that is optional for the students.

Eligibility & Entry Requirement

Academic Eligibility:
  • Students must complete a bachelor’s degree or equivalent in an engineering field from a recognized university.
  • Students have a minimum B average grade in the last 2 years of the student’s undergraduate program. 
  • Submission of GRE scores is not compulsory for this program.
Indian Student Eligibility:
  • Completed a 4-year UG degree with first class in a relevant field from a recognized institution.
  • Or, completed a 3-year UG degree must have a substantial background in engineering or a related field.
