Program Description

  • MSc in Mathematical and Statistical Science at the University of Alberta allows students to complete this course in 2 years.
  • It is an on-campus, thesis, and course-based program offered on a full-time basis.
  • This is a 1 or 2-year program where students will take a number of advanced graduate-level classes, and finish a project.
  • The MSc degree requirements can be completed in one year if the student pursues the course-based route and students in the thesis program usually take slightly longer to complete the degree.
  • The research areas of the program are:
    • Applied Mathematics and Mathematics
    • Mathematical Finance
    • Mathematical Physics
    • Modeling, Data, and Predictions (MDP)
    • Statistics and Biostatistics
    • Statistical Machine Learning
  • The minimum requirements for obtaining an MSc degree in a thesis-based program are the satisfactory completion of six single-term graduate courses and a thesis.
  • For the course-based program, the minimum requirements are the satisfactory completion of eight single-term graduate courses and an approved project.

Eligibility & Entry Requirement

Academic Eligibility:
  • Students must complete a 4-year undergraduate degree such as BSc (Honors or Specialization) degree or the equivalent from a recognized university, with a strong background in applied or pure mathematics and/or statistics.
  • For some specialization areas, other than BSc degrees, students must complete a degree in Physics or Computing Science, which will also be considered.
  • A GPA of 3.3 on a 4.0 scale on the most recent two-years of full-time study (or equivalent) is required.
