Program Description

Four years of study together with the flexibility to choose from a range of different modules in related disciplines including marketing, accounting, human resource management and economics, aims to accelerate you on your chosen career path. You will expand your knowledge about different contemporary management theories and techniques to improve your understanding of organisations and the environment in which they operate. The entire course will provide you with excellent expertise in a whole array of different areas from management and related subjects.

DEVELOPING YOUR MANAGEMENT EXPERTISE

Modern business needs individuals who can think critically about managing and what work means for employees. You will examine organisations from a sociological viewpoint, looking at modern work situations and focussing on how we affect each other in familiar networks like family and in the community, through to more formal networks.Right from the start of our Business Management MSci you can begin to tailor your studies from a selection of modules from the business world. You can choose to study microeconomics and macroeconomics, the principles of marketing and accounting, explore consumer behaviour, study international business and learn more about managing in organisations by working with other students to find a solution to a business problem set by a multinational corporation. As you progress into year two you will discover concepts around human behaviour in organisations including the Taylorist and Human Relations approaches. You will focus on your own professional development which will allow you to carry out career planning so you can achieve your future ambitions.Optional modules at this stage will continue to enhance your learning, from taking a more advanced look at areas such as microeconomics, econometrics, human resource management, consumer behaviour and financial accounting, to studying taxation, contemporary economics, digital and marketing communications, and operations and quality management. In year three you will examine business strategy and undertake activities including a virtual business game simulation that will give you the opportunity to put the theory you have been learning on the course into practice. You will continue to select modules that will align with your interests and these might include pay and performance management, examining contemporary retail environments, analysing the audit framework and looking at contemporary issues in management. You can also choose to undertake an independent study project in either economic and business forecasting or contemporary issues in human resource management - both a great way to improve your research skills.Your final year will focus on enhancing your leadership skills through development exercises and increasing your knowledge of the theoretical approaches to leadership. You'll explore the current debates and practices in leadership in the context of global business and analyse case studies on the subject and develop effective tools for solving the type of leadership dilemmas facing contemporary organisations. You will produce your final dissertation project where you can use the knowledge from the course to create an extended piece of research. Optional modules at this high-level will develop your knowledge in areas such as performance management, international strategic management, entrepreneurship, branding and contemporary challenges in global business.

STRENGTHENING YOUR EMPLOYABILITY

This course offers you some distinct opportunities for opportunities to apply your learning to real-world business scenarios in years two or three. In year four you will undertake a compulsory research dissertation.

CONSULTANCY PROJECT*

You can work for 8 to 12 weeks on a consultancy project for an organisation chosen by Keele Business School. In addition to the placement at the organisation you will produce a consultancy report, presentation and a reflective piece and an organisation/company assessment. The consultancy project's aim is to encourage reflective practice and to provide you with the opportunity to put into practice the skills and knowledge you've learnt on the Business Management MSci.

PLACEMENT PROJECT*

With the support of Keele Business School's Placement Officer you will find and secure a work placement of a maximum duration of three months. The placement should be paid and you will be required to complete an extended project on behalf of the organisation you are on placement with. You will complete a project report, presentation and reflective study about your placement project.*Students who require a visa to study in the UK may be able to add in a work placement depending upon the programme. The ability to add a work placement is dependent upon the UK Immigration rules at the time of the request. It may be that for some programmes students will not have the option to request a placement period to be added to their programme before they arrive in the UK and would need to apply for a new visa. There is no guarantee that a placement will be provided and that students who have a visa are subject to a number of restrictions on the type of work, including placements they can undertake.

ENTREPRENEURSHIP PROJECT

This exciting opportunity allows you the time and space to develop your own business idea. You will have access to facilities and expertise for a period of three months. During this period you will produce a portfolio of evidence, undertake a presentation about your project to an external stakeholder and produce a piece of reflective study. The Entrepreneurship pathway is available to UK and international students. Yet for international students, the availability of the Entrepreneurship pathway is subject due to the latest visa regulations.

You will use the knowledge and skills from the programme to undertake an original extended piece of research, which can be applied in nature and is an opportunity for you to integrate your management knowledge and research skills with problems in real business environments.
