Program Description

The pharmaceutical industry is a global one that offers many different career possibilities. Pharmaceutical Science at Keele was co-developed with experts from the pharmaceutical industry who work in areas including formulation development and regulatory affairs, and academic experts who have first hand experience of working in the field. As a result of this, graduate skills are aligned to the industry demands.

DRUG DISCOVERY AND DEVELOPMENT PATHWAY

The pharmaceutical industry strives to develop new drugs, the formulation of medicines and medical devices to advance healthcare provision. Throughout the programme you will be encouraged to explore themes such as tpharmhe pathway for the discovery and development of therapeutic drugs and the cost effectiveness of medications.This incorporates product formulation, manufacturing, quality assurance, clinical trials design and implementation. The aim is for you to understand how medicines gain approval to be marketed and, ultimately, how these medications are administered.

INDUSTRY SKILLS

You will undertake laboratory experiments to develop the vital scientific skills required to work in the pharmaceutical industry. We also provide you with additional practical opportunities that give you real world experience of some of the processes and documentation requirements that are currently found in the pharmaceutical industry to help enhance your employability. Having the knowledge and understanding of how to undertake such tasks will give you the confidence to execute these tasks within the workplace.Core modules introduce you to subject areas such as human anatomy and physiology to improve your understanding of the structure of the human body, organs and tissues, and how disease affects it. You will explore the essential elements of chemistry and pharmacology and also develop your understanding of the principles of biochemistry, looking at the chemistry of life to understand the functioning of cells at molecular and cellular levels.Pharmaceutical Science at Keele offers you the flexibility to tailor the course to your personal interests and career aspirations. If you’re aiming for a role within pharmaceutical sales and marketing, then you can choose to take optional marketing modules that focus on key marketing theories that could assist you to promote new medicines effectively. You may choose to study modules that introduce you to management concepts that develop your knowledge for future leadership roles, and learn about international business which concentrates on global trade, investment, and international management.If you have international ambitions, you can also choose a language pathway to enable you to study not just a language but develop a cultural understanding of nations outside your home country.

OUR EXPERTISE

You will be taught by staff with expertise in the core areas of pharmaceutical science such as pharmacology, physiology, medicinal and organic chemistry, and pharmaceutical formulation. Some of our academic staff have previously worked in the pharmaceutical and related industries. We have connections with industry professionals who deliver authentic examples around current areas of the sector such as clinical development, marketing and branding of pharmaceutical products, and the role of healthcare systems in the context of pharmaceutical sales and regulatory affairs. Business and management modules are delivered by experienced academic staff from Keele Business School.

STUDENT SUPPORT

We provide a supportive learning environment for you during your pharmaceutical science degree. You will be allocated an academic mentor from the School who will be your first point of contact for academic advice and guidance.Based within our faculty is a Student Experience and Support team who have a member of the team dedicated to the School of Pharmacy and Bioengineering. As part of Keele’s student services, they work closely with teams across Keele to ensure you can easily access the support you need.There is peer support, and additional help is available from the School's Disability Liaison Officer who provides an additional layer of support for all students, particularly for those who have special learning needs.You will have access to a mixture of advice and support services at Keele which include;

Other Requirements

  • CISCE / CBSE / West Bengal Class XII: 60% - 90% required depending on course. Subjects Requirements : - Maths with 70% and English with 60% All other State Boards Higher Secondary Certificate (HSC) / Standard Class XII: 65% - 95% required depending on course.Subjects Requirements : - Maths with 70% and English with 60% 2 years of study must have been completed.
  • For IELTS Waiver : CISCE/CBSE Class XII: 70% or above. All other State Boards Class XII (except Punjab or Mohali School Education Board): 75% or above in English, depending on course.Study should be taught in English. Otherwise IELTS is required.
