Program Description
OVERVIEW
Neuroscience is a vibrant and constantly evolving discipline that explores the brain, from how it enables us to sense and move through our environment, to degeneration in health and in disease. With over 600 types of neurological conditions currently identified (NHS England), understanding how the brain and nervous system work is integral to the future of human health and well-being.Our Neuroscience BSc aims to equip you with the multidisciplinary skills and knowledge used by Neuroscientists (typically research scientists) in their quest to design and carry out experiments to understand more about the brain and nervous system.YEAR ONE
The first year of the programme is carefully designed to bring together the diverse learning experiences across the cohort, enabling common understanding of the biosciences. You will explore a mixture of core modules that will provide you with a grounding in basic biological techniques, an introduction to the core concepts of neuroscience and the practical skills required for a career within the field.During your first and second year, you will take laboratory classes most weeks to develop practical, analytical, observational and interpretative skills.
YEAR TWO
Building on the knowledge and practical experience acquired in year one, you will gain a much deeper understanding of neuroscience. Typical topics of study include how the brain develops, the mechanisms underlying learning and memory, how drugs affect the nervous system, the anatomy of the human and animal nervous systems, and how electrical activity in the brain works to control function. You will also expand your research and analytical skills by exploring the different forms of scientific experimental design that you may encounter in your final year experimental projects.YEAR THREE
Your final year will include both core and optional modules plus the opportunity to unleash your creativity in your final year research project.Core modules will explore what can go wrong in terms of brain injury and disease, the pathology behind this and the most recent research to explore how we can repair the brain following trauma. To complement your research project you will choose from a variety of optional modules that reflect your career aspirations and interests.Your final year research project is a fantastic opportunity to integrate your personal passions with your studies and look at them from a neurological perspective.
Types of projects you may undertake include; lab-based, systematic reviews, bioinformatics, pedagogic or outreach work. You can even carry out your research in industry by choosing to study on our six-month work placement. Throughout your project you will be supported and supervised by an academic who has expertise in your chosen area of study.
GAIN PRACTICAL EXPERIENCE IN INDUSTRY
In an increasingly competitive job market, employers are seeking to recruit employees who have high-level knowledge, skills and an understanding of the workplace. If you're unsure which area of neuroscience you want to focus on, work experience can also provide you with a deep insight into what the work is like. From a year working in industry and paid internships to summer secondment research placements, our programme offers many opportunities for you to gain familiarisation with the professional working environment, develop professional contacts and apply the skills and theories you have learnt.INTERNATIONAL YEAR
In between years two and three of your studies you can choose to spend a year studying abroad. This exciting opportunity enable you to understand your field from different cultural perspectives and to establish international networks. It also shows you have the personal attributes to embrace new experiences which can enhance your employability.
We offer exchange opportunities with a wide variety of partner institutions.Alternative opportunities to gain international experience include our School tropical field course that takes place in Malaysia or expeditions to some of the most remote and stunning places worldwide, through Operation Wallacea.
SUPPORT
We offer a multi layered support structure to help you meet your academic and personal needs. Our open-door policy enables you to engage with us directly, meaning you can seek support, gain feedback or discuss any matters on a regular basis. You will benefit from the support of an assigned academic mentor and Keele's Student Experience and Support team.PRACTICAL SUPPORT
During practical workshops you will have the support from a variety of academic staff. In addition to your lead lecturer you will benefit from the guidance of:- Senior demonstrators
- Postgraduate student demonstrators
- Laboratory technicians
- Core skills videos and laboratory simulations
- Data analysis workshops
SOCIETIES
We have a wealth of student-led societies which cover a diverse range of interests. Joining a society related to your field is a great opportunity to continue to develop your skills away from your studies. This is another excellent way of demonstrating your genuine interest for the area and can be beneficial when it comes to applying for graduate roles.
It’s also a great way to meet like-minded people, make friends and share interests with fellow students.Societies you may find interesting include Keele Neuroscience Society and Keele Neurology Society.
