Program Description

Our Medicinal Chemistry and Neuroscience BSc offers you the fantastic opportunity to study two exciting subjects and develop a breadth of skills and knowledge. From understanding how pharmaceuticals interact with the human body to exploring drug design to combat various diseases, the application of medicinal chemistry plays a vital part in prolonging and improving life. The medicinal chemistry element of the course provide you with a strong grounding in core medicinal chemistry knowledge in areas such as the principles of drug design. This focusses on understanding the interaction of small molecules with biological targets in the body and applying this to the design of drug molecules. During practical sessions you will learn advanced experimental techniques including handling air-sensitive reagents, and also complete a multi-step synthesis of nalidixic acid (the heterocyclic core of a new class of antibacterial agents) to mimic the processes used in the pharmaceutical industry.

Neuroscience is a vibrant and constantly evolving discipline that explores the brain, from how it enables us to sense and move through our environment, to degeneration in health and in disease. With over 600 types of neurological conditions currently identified (NHS England), understanding how the brain and nervous system work is integral to the future of human health and well-being. Modules in the neuroscience component of the programme will equip you with the multidisciplinary skills and knowledge used by Neuroscientists (typically research scientists) in their quest to design and carry out experiments to understand more about the brain and nervous system.

INTERNATIONAL YEAR

In between years two and three of your studies you can choose to spend a year studying abroad. This exciting opportunity enables you to understand your field from different cultural perspectives and to establish international networks. It also shows you have the personal attributes to embrace new experiences which can enhance your employability. We offer exchange opportunities with a wide variety of partner institutions.

SUPPORT

We offer a multi layered support structure to help you meet your academic and personal needs. Our open-door policy enables you to engage with us directly, meaning you can seek support, gain feedback or discuss matters relating to your course. You will also benefit from the support of an assigned academic mentor and access to Keele's Student Experience and Support team.

PRACTICAL SUPPORT

During practical workshops in neuroscience, you will have support from a variety of academic staff. In addition to your lead lecturer you will benefit from the guidance of:
  • Senior demonstrators
