Program Description

On this combined honours course in Medicinal Chemistry and Mathematics you will have the opportunity to explore the core concepts and theories of these two fascinating subjects.

The Medicinal Chemistry component of the programme will provide you with an understanding of the complex biological and chemical problems that are involved in the design and synthesis of drugs. You will draw on basic chemical principles to solve problems at the interfaces of chemistry, biochemistry, molecular biology and pharmacology and gain professional chemistry skills that are necessary for laboratory classes throughout the course. You will consider how mathematics can be applied to various aspects of the world we live in and gain a solid understanding of the fundamentals of this discipline. You will delve into the core areas of mathematics, including calculus, algebra and probability, as well as developing a solid foundation in mathematical methods and techniques so you can apply these principles to the real world. Throughout the programme, you will have the opportunity to explore pure mathematics, applied mathematics and statistics. To help develop the skills employers are looking for, you will also learn the programming language Python and understand how mathematics is used in a professional environment.
