Program Description

COURSE STRUCTURE

Studying a combined honours in Mathematics and Psychology gives you the opportunity to explore two subjects you enjoy in depth to develop a wide range of expertise and skills.
Mathematics can be related to almost every aspect of the world we live in. Our curriculum is carefully designed to ensure you have a solid grasp of the fundamentals of the discipline, so you can apply these principles to the real world. You will explore the core areas of mathematics, including calculus, algebra and particular attention will be given to making sure you have a solid foundation in mathematical methods and techniques. Your understanding of the core areas of mathematics are built upon in years two and three with streams of modules in pure mathematics, applied mathematics and statistics. To help develop the skills employers are looking for, you will also learn the programming language Python and understand how mathematics is used in a professional environment.
Psychology will equip you with a well-rounded education and in addition to studying the principal areas specified by the British Psychological Society (BPS) curriculum, you will have the opportunity to tailor your degree to reflect your career aspirations and interests. Principle areas of psychology may include: biological, cognitive, social and developmental psychology as well as individual differences and historical issues. You will gain fundamental scientific skills in research design, statistics, qualitative and survey methods. With this knowledge, you will learn how to conduct research and critically analyse that of others.

FINAL YEAR PROJECT IN PSYCHOLOGY

In your final year you will have the opportunity to work with one of our expert academics to carry out and report an investigation of a research topic that aligns with your career aspirations or personal interests.Final year project topics from previous Psychology students include:

SUMMER RESEARCH ASSISTANTSHIP SCHEME

Our summer research assistantship scheme is a paid opportunity during your second or third year that enables you to work alongside a member of staff on a research project. The experience and skills you will gain, such as data analysis, can really help you stand out from the crowd when applying for employment or postgraduate study. Please note there is an application process for this scheme and the number of projects available will vary each year.

ENGAGE WITH REAL-WORLD PROJECTS

During your degree programme, you may have the opportunity to work on psychology research led by staff, PhD and master's students. This is a fantastic opportunity for you to learn about research methods and it will provide you with insight into the diversity of research carried out within the School of Psychology.

GAIN PRACTICAL EXPERIENCE IN INDUSTRY

In between year two and three of your studies, you will have the opportunity to spend a year in industry with a placement provider aligned to either Mathematics or Psychology. This will help prepare you for the workplace by becoming familiar with the professional working environment and having the opportunity to draw upon principles, skills, theories, or methods. This is a valuable, character-building experience where your can develop both personally and professionally.

INTERNATIONAL YEAR

You may have the opportunity to spend a year studying abroad with a wide variety of partner institutions. Studying abroad is an exciting opportunity to experience and appreciate different cultural perspectives and to establish international networks. It demonstrates your ability to embrace new experiences and enables you to immerse yourself in another culture whilst developing your independence and cultural awareness.

  • CISCE / CBSE / West Bengal Class XII: 60% - 90% required depending on course. Subjects Requirements : - Maths with 70% and English with 60% All other State Boards Higher Secondary Certificate (HSC) / Standard Class XII: 65% - 95% required depending on course.Subjects Requirements : - Maths with 70% and English with 60% 2 years of study must have been completed.
  • For IELTS Waiver : CISCE/CBSE Class XII: 70% or above. All other State Boards Class XII (except Punjab or Mohali School Education Board): 75% or above in English, depending on course.Study should be taught in English. Otherwise IELTS is required.
