Program Description

COURSE STRUCTURE

Mathematics can be related to almost every aspect of the world we live in. Our curriculum is carefully designed to ensure you have a solid grasp of the fundamentals of the discipline, so you can apply these principles to the real world. During years one and two, our programme provides a broad coverage of the three main discipline areas of pure mathematics, applied mathematics and statistics. By following the statistics pathway, your third year of study will focus on a variety of modules that reflect your interest in this area, such as medical statistics and financial mathematics.

YEAR ONE

The first year of the programme will carefully explore the core areas of mathematics, including calculus and algebra. Particular attention will be given to making sure you have a solid foundation in mathematical methods and techniques. We will coach you to think logically, construct rigorous proofs and think in abstract terms. You will also be introduced to useful mathematical structures. You will also have the flexibility to choose an optional module in an area suited to your personal interests and career aspirations.

YEAR TWO

Your understanding of the core areas of mathematics are built upon in years two and three with streams of modules in pure mathematics, applied mathematics and statistics. To help develop the skills employers are looking for, you will also learn the programming language Python and understand how mathematics is used in a professional environment.

YEAR THREE

You will have the flexibility to tailor your studies to your personal interests by choosing from a variety of optional modules that are related to statistics, such as financial mathematics and medical statistics. You may also choose to work on a final year project where you can unleash your creativity and apply the techniques you have acquired to a particular topic or problem in mathematics or statistics.

GAIN WORK EXPERIENCE

We are committed to ensuring you graduate with the theory and skills that employers are looking for. To do this, we offer a suite of opportunities to enable you to develop your employability skills. Paid or voluntary experience in your area of interest will not only demonstrate your commitment and passion, but will also enable you to make meaningful connections by networking with experts in the field. From a year working in industry to paid internships, summer research projects and practical modules, there are many opportunities embedded throughout our programme to enhance your employability.

INTERNATIONAL YEAR

You may have the opportunity to spend a year studying abroad with a wide variety of partner institutions. Studying abroad is an exciting opportunity to experience and appreciate different cultural perspectives and to establish international networks. It demonstrates your ability to embrace new experiences and enables you to immerse yourself in another culture whilst developing your independence and cultural awareness.

STUDENT SUPPORT

Our student-centered ethos underpins all that we do and we were proud to be ranked Top 10 for Student Satisfaction (National Student Survey, 2021). To help you meet your academic and personal needs, we offer a multi layered support structure that includes access to an academic mentor and dedicated member of staff from Keele's Student Experience and Support team.

LEARNING TOOLS AND RESOURCES

To support your learning you will have access to a variety of materials and resources via Keele's virtual learning environment (KLE). Modules, post notes, problem sets and solutions can be found online and most will have videos, either captured from the lectures or bespoke recordings.

FLEXIBILITY

We recognise that your aspirations and interests in the field of mathematics may develop as you are exposed to the diverse themes throughout the programme. With this in mind, we offer you the opportunity to transfer between our programmes during year two of your studies. This gives you the time and space to find your passion. Transfer also applies to our four-year integrated master's programme (depending on individual performance).

SOCIETIES

We have a wealth of student-led societies at Keele which cover a diverse range of interests. Joining a society related to mathematics is a great opportunity to continue to develop your skills away from your studies. This is another excellent way of demonstrating your genuine interest for mathematics and can be beneficial when it comes to applying for graduate roles. It’s also a great way to make friends and share interests with fellow students.

COMMITTED TO EQUALITY, DIVERSITY AND INCLUSION

We are committed to equality, diversity and inclusion. This means we aim to create a diverse and inclusive culture in which you can thrive. Our Equality, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) agenda is embedded throughout our curriculum, and we are proud to hold a School-level Athena SWAN Bronze Award in recognition for our activities in this area.
