Program Description

History and Psychology combines the study of the past and the human mind and behaviour. You will explore the social, economic, political, and cultural forces that have shaped global history as well as the biological influences and social pressures that affect how people think, act, and feel. Psychology underpins all that we are and everything we do.History at Keele is taught by academics who are active researchers and experts across a diverse range of fields (from political, social, economic and cultural history to the history of gender, health, sexuality and religion) and periods (from late-antiquity to the present day). You will develop your knowledge, critical thinking, and analytical skills by studying a range of topics but will also benefit from the opportunity to specialise in areas that align to your personal interests and career aspirations. This will enable you to trace the course of change in key areas of human history and appreciate the impact of events, forces, and processes on individual societies and the world as a whole.You will learn how to research diverse topics effectively, how to critically interrogate evidence and reflect on pivotal moments in history. This will involve working both independently and as part of a team in order to broaden your knowledge and develop transferable skills that will allow you to interpret information from various sources critically and effectively.Psychology will equip you with a well-rounded education and in addition to studying the principal areas specified by the British Psychological Society (BPS) curriculum, you will have the opportunity to tailor your degree to reflect your career aspirations and interests.Principle areas of psychology include: biological, cognitive, social and developmental psychology as well as individual differences and historical issues. You will gain fundamental scientific skills in research design, statistics, qualitative and survey methods. With this knowledge, you will learn how to conduct research and critically analyse that of others.The skills you will develop on this degree will not only equip you with subject-specific knowledge but will provide you with a variety of transferable scientific and humanities based skills that can be used in a wide range of sectors.

ENGAGE WITH REAL-WORLD PROJECTS

During your degree programme, you may have the opportunity to work on research, led by staff, PhD and master's students in the School of Psychology. This is a fantastic opportunity for you to learn about research methods and gain insight into the diversity of research carried out within the School of Psychology.

FINAL YEAR PROJECT IN PSYCHOLOGY

In your final year you will have the opportunity to work with one of our expert academics to carry out and report an investigation of a research topic that aligns with your career aspirations or personal interests.Final year project topics from previous Psychology students include:

SUMMER RESEARCH ASSISTANTSHIP SCHEME

The School of Psychology offers a summer research assistantship scheme that is a paid opportunity during your second or third year of study. This scheme involves working alongside a member of staff on a research project and gaining valuable skills and experience in data analysis, that can help you to stand out from the crowd when applying for employment or postgraduate study.Please note there is an application process for this scheme and the number of projects available will vary each year.

RESEARCH-ACTIVE COMMUNITY IN PSYCHOLOGY

Teaching in psychology is driven by research and you will learn about some of the latest topics in the field.Research within the School of Psychology is supported by four research groups: the Cognition, Brain, & Behaviour Research Group, the Developmental Psychology Research Group, the Social Psychological Research Group, and the Health and Well-being Research Group.In addition, there is a Children and Young People Research Network, and various members of the school are engaged in interdisciplinary research, including the Keele Policing Collaboration (KPAC), the Keele Centre for Aging Research (KCAR), and projects with colleagues in Health, Social Sciences and Humanities disciplines.

WORK PLACEMENTS

The School of Humanities hosts a ‘Work Placement in the Humanities’ optional module which provides you with the opportunity to apply for a placement within an organisation to further enhance your professional skills. With the guidance of module tutors, you will identify an organisation based on your interests, and will spend a semester engaging with projects and tasks set out by the employer. You may cover areas such as heritage, education, charity, marketing and management, as well as the creative industry.Alumni have previously taken work placements in a range of settings including museums and schools. You will engage with taught sessions in addition to your time at your chosen organisation and will be encouraged to reflect upon your experiences to identify how you can apply your learnings throughout your studies and beyond.You may choose to apply for a Work Placement Year in either History or Psychology, between Year 2 and 3, that allows you to practice your knowledge and prepare for employment after university. This opportunity will enable you to build confidence in the workplace and demonstrate your abilities in a professional environment, using the skills you have gained throughout your degree programme. This is a valuable, character-building experience where you will develop both personally and professionally.

  • CISCE / CBSE / West Bengal Class XII: 60% - 90% required depending on course. Subjects Requirements : - Maths with 70% and English with 60% All other State Boards Higher Secondary Certificate (HSC) / Standard Class XII: 65% - 95% required depending on course.Subjects Requirements : - Maths with 70% and English with 60% 2 years of study must have been completed.
  • For IELTS Waiver : CISCE/CBSE Class XII: 70% or above. All other State Boards Class XII (except Punjab or Mohali School Education Board): 75% or above in English, depending on course.Study should be taught in English. Otherwise IELTS is required.
