WHAT IS GEOLOGY?
Geology is the study of the structure, evolution and dynamics of the Earth and its natural mineral and energy resources - if it hasn't been grown, then a geologist has discovered it. Our society is based on the work of geologists in the hunt for natural resources for energy and materials for modern living. The discipline draws on knowledge from many different aspects of science such as chemistry, biology, and physics as well as other subjects such as geography and environmental science.WHAT IS GEOFORENSICS?
Geoforensics is the application of geology to criminal investigations. Geoforensics is a practical subject requiring the use of applied problem-solving, laboratory and field skills to collect and analyse geoforensic data.GEOFORENSICS AT KEELE
Our Geology (Geoforensics) BSc provides particular emphasis on the geoforensic analysis of earth materials and how it can be applied to a range of criminal, civil and environmental criminal applications. You will learn how geoforensic trace evidence can be used to link material or an offender to a crime scene. The course also includes how to undertake a multi-phased geoforensic search for missing persons, suspected murder victims, environmental/wildlife crime and to recover items of forensic interest.COURSE STRUCTURE
BSc Geology (Geoforensics) is an applied course that examines the Earth, its structure, formation, composition, history, processes, hazards and materials. This course covers a range of topics which may include looking at rocks, minerals and fossils and geological processes. Beyond that, a range of optional modules allow you to tailor your degree towards your individual interests and career aspirations. Our courses are strongly aligned to the role of geoscience in the UN's Sustainable Development Goals.YEAR ONE
The first year of the programme is carefully designed to bring together the diverse learning experiences across the cohort, enabling common understanding of geoscience topics. Core first year modules will explore themes such as the formation and structure of the earth, minerals and rocks, the earth system and an introduction to forensic science as a professional discipline in the context of the crime scene, the laboratory and the court. You will also have the opportunity to apply your theoretical learning to real-world situations through practical field work. To help you develop the appropriate learning skills and subject-specific practical skills required in the study of geology, you will complete a 'core skills' module that includes topics such as:- Fieldwork in both laboratory and field-based environments
- Health and safety
- Programming
- Statistics
- Techniques of data capture
- Writing and communication
YEAR TWO
During the second year, particular attention is paid to observation, recording and interpretation of geological and phenomena in the field and laboratory. You will also develop a critical understanding of more advanced topics in geoforensics such as forensic genetics and criminalistic methods. By the end of the second year you will have developed a complete grounding in geology and geoforensics that will allow you to carry out your own independent studies.YEAR THREE
In your final year, you will study a mix of advanced modules that will develop your understanding of geoforensics and broaden your knowledge in the field. Core modules will include exploring topics such as frontiers in geoforensics and carrying out independent work on a project related to geoforensics. You will also have the opportunity to tailor your learning to your career aspirations and or interests by selecting a variety of optional modules in areas such as advanced sedimentology, explosives and arson and forensic toxicology.SPEND A YEAR IN INDUSTRY
In an increasingly competitive job market, employers are seeking to recruit employees who have high-level knowledge, skills and an understanding of the workplace. Between years two and three of your degree, you can spend a year gaining practical experience with a geologically-focused company or organisation. You will become familiar with the professional working environment and the opportunity to apply the geological skills and theories you have learnt.FIELDWORK
Fieldwork is an essential component of a Geology degree, it provides the opportunity to relate the theory and practical activities covered in class to a natural laboratory. Fieldwork is embedded into core modules throughout your studies to help you acquire key geological observation and interpretation skills. It's also a great way to foster connections with academics and peers and apply your learning to real-world situations.Fieldwork activities may include:- Designing and interpreting appropriate near-surface geophysical surveys for a geoforensics investigation
- Interpreting and analysing geological information from aerial photographs
- Mapping and classification of geological structures
- Producing geological maps and properly structured geological reports
- Studying the main rock types and their geological structures
- Using geographical information system and remote sensing techniques to visualise and analyse geoscience data

- CISCE / CBSE / West Bengal Class XII: 60% - 90% required depending on course. Subjects Requirements : -English with 60% All other State Boards Higher Secondary Certificate (HSC) / Standard Class XII: 65% - 95% required depending on course.Subjects Requirements : - Maths with 70% and English with 60% 2 years of study must have been completed.
- For IELTS Waiver : CISCE/CBSE Class XII: 70% or above. All other State Boards Class XII (except Punjab or Mohali School Education Board): 75% or above in English, depending on course.Study should be taught in English. Otherwise IELTS is required.
