Program Description
WHAT IS GEOLOGY?
Geology is the science that investigates how the Earth was formed, how life arose and evolved, why the Earth looks like it does today, what resources it contains and how we can find them. The discipline draws on knowledge from many different aspects of science such as chemistry, biology, and physics as well as other subjects such as geography and environmental science. Our society is based on the work of geologists in the hunt for natural resources for energy and materials for modern living. Geologists are likely to be in high demand for years to come due to the continuous evolution of modern societies.SPECIALIST PATHWAY
Geophysics is a practical subject with applied problem-solving laboratory classes and field courses where you will learn how to collect, process and interpret geophysical data, and explore for future geological resources. This specialist course focuses particularly on applied geophysical research skills and you will learn to carry out your own research using specialist geophysical software and equipment. You will also examine the uses of geophysics in geotechnics, ground engineering, geoforensics and environmental monitoring. There is a strong emphasis on developing fieldwork, laboratory, communication and applied research skills.COURSE STRUCTURE
BSc Geology (Applied Geophysics) is an applied course that examines the Earth, its structure, formation, composition, history, processes, hazards and materials. This course covers a range of topics which may include looking at rocks, minerals and fossils and geological processes. Beyond that, a range of optional modules allow you to tailor your degree towards your individual interests and career aspirations. Our courses are strongly aligned to the role of geoscience in the UN's Sustainable Development Goals.YEAR ONE
The first year of the programme is carefully designed to bring together the diverse learning experiences across the cohort, enabling common understanding of geoscience topics. You will study topics such as the structure, formation, composition and history of the Earth, natural hazards, minerals and rocks, and paleontology. To help you develop the appropriate learning skills and subject-specific practical skills required in the study of geology, you will complete a 'core skills' module that includes topics such as:- Fieldwork in both laboratory and field-based environments
- Health and safety
- Programming
- Statistics
- Techniques of data capture
- Writing and communication
YEAR TWO
During the second year, particular attention is paid to observation, recording and interpretation of geological and geophysical phenomena in the field and laboratory. It is the intention that by the end of the second year you will have developed a complete grounding in geology and geophysics that will allow you to carry out your own independent geological studies. We place a strong emphasis on fieldwork and applied problem-solving laboratory classes to prepare you for your final year research project and gain understanding and work relevant experiences through a dedicated employability module.YEAR THREE
In your final year, you will explore a mix of core modules relating to applied geophysics, including an independent field project. You will also have the opportunity to broaden your knowledge by choosing from a variety of optional modules. Optional modules may include topics such as; advanced sedimentology, economic geology and structure and geodynamics.FIELDWORK
Fieldwork is an essential component of a Geology degree, it provides the opportunity to relate the theory and practical activities covered in class to a natural laboratory. Fieldwork is embedded into core modules throughout your studies to help you acquire key geological observation and interpretation skills. It's also a great way to foster connections with academics and peers and apply your learning to real-world situations. Fieldwork activities may include:- Designing and interpreting appropriate near-surface geophysical surveys for an environmental or geotechnical investigation
- Interpreting and analysing geological information from aerial photographs
- Mapping and classification of geological structures
- Producing geological maps and properly structured geological reports
- Studying the main rock types and their geological structures
- Using geographical information system and remote sensing techniques to visualise and analyse geoscience data

- CISCE / CBSE / West Bengal Class XII: 60% - 90% required depending on course. Subjects Requirements : -English with 60% All other State Boards Higher Secondary Certificate (HSC) / Standard Class XII: 65% - 95% required depending on course.Subjects Requirements : - Maths with 70% and English with 60% 2 years of study must have been completed.
- For IELTS Waiver : CISCE/CBSE Class XII: 70% or above. All other State Boards Class XII (except Punjab or Mohali School Education Board): 75% or above in English, depending on course.Study should be taught in English. Otherwise IELTS is required.
