Program Description

WHAT IS GEOLOGY?

Geology is the science that investigates how the Earth was formed, how life arose and evolved, why the Earth looks like it does today, what resources it contains and how we can find them. The discipline draws on knowledge from many different aspects of science such as chemistry, biology, and physics as well as other subjects such as geography and environmental science. Modern society is based on the work of geologists in the hunt for natural resources for energy and materials for contemporary living. Geologists are likely to be in high demand for years to come due to the continuous evolution of modern societies.

COURSE STRUCTURE

BSc Geology is an applied course that examines the Earth, its structure, formation, composition, history, processes, hazards and materials. This course covers a range of topics which may include looking at rocks, minerals and fossils and geological processes. Beyond that, a range of optional modules allow you to tailor your degree towards your individual interests and career aspirations. Our courses are strongly aligned to the role of geoscience in the UN's Sustainable Development Goals.

YEAR ONE

The first year of the programme is carefully designed to bring together the diverse learning experiences across the cohort, enabling common understanding of geoscience topics. You will study topics such as the structure, formation, composition and history of the Earth, natural hazards, minerals and rocks, and palaeontology. To help you develop the appropriate learning skills and subject-specific practical skills required in the study of geology, you will complete a 'core skills' module in the following areas;
  • Fieldwork in both laboratory and field-based environments
  • Health and safety
  • Programming
  • Statistics
  • Techniques of data capture
  • Writing and communication

YEAR TWO

During the second year, particular attention is paid to observation, recording and interpretation of geological phenomena in the field and laboratory. It is the intention that by the end of the second year you will have developed a complete grounding in geology that will allow you to perform your own independent geological studies. There is a strong emphasis on fieldwork and applied problem-solving laboratory classes to prepare you for your final year research project. You can also gain work relevent experiences through an optional employability module.

YEAR THREE

Your final year consists of a mix of core modules and the opportunity to personalise your degree by choosing from a wide variety of optional modules.

Core modules include:
  • Advanced petrology and structural geology field course - a week-long residential course dedicated to the study of geological structures and igneous and metamorphic rocks in the field
  • Economic geology - an exploration of earth materials that can be used for economic and/or industrial purpose
  • Geoscience: independent field project
Optional modules may include topics such as;
  • Advanced sedimentology
  • Hydrological and engineering geology
  • Micropalaeontology
  • Natural hazards
  • Reservoir geology and geophysics
  • Structure and geodynamics
  • Extinction

FIELDWORK

Fieldwork is an essential component of a Geology degree, it provides the opportunity to relate the theory and practical activities covered in class to a natural laboratory.Fieldwork is embedded into core modules throughout your studies to help you acquire key geological observation and interpretation skills. It is a great way to foster connections with academics and peers and apply your learning to real-world situations. Fieldwork activities may include:
  • Designing and interpreting appropriate near-surface geophysical surveys for an environmental or geotechnical investigation
  • Interpreting and analysing geological information from aerial photographs
  • Mapping and classification of geological structures
  • Producing geological maps and properly structured geological reports
  • Studying the main rock types and their geological structures
  • Using geographical information system and remote sensing techniques to visualise and analyse geoscience data
In previous years our students have undertaken field courses in the UK to Pembrokeshire, the Peak District, Snowdonia, Mull in western Scotland and overseas destinations including Almeria in Spain and southern Italy.

LEARN FROM OUR CAMPUS - OUR OWN 'LIVING LABORATORY'

Our unique 600-acre campus offers a fantastic natural environment to perform fieldwork, test new ideas and discover solutions to real-world problems. From our lake system and extensive woodlands to the mining and industrial heritage of the local area, there are many opportunities to study in an authentic environment whilst practicing sustainably.

INDEPENDENT FIELD-BASED PROJECT

Under the supervision of a mapping supervisor, you will spend between two and three weeks of your second-year summer vacation geologically mapping an area of between nine to twelve kilometres square. You will examine the rock types and geological structures in that particular area and how they relate to one another. This project will form part of your final year modules where you will collate, report on your findings, and produce a high-quality map to present your results and learnings

SPEND A YEAR IN INDUSTRY

In an increasingly competitive job market, employers are seeking to recruit employees who have high-level knowledge, skills and an understanding of the workplace. Between years two and three of your degree, you can choose to spend a year gaining practical experience with a geologically-focussed company or organisation. This will benefit you by providing familiarisation with the professional working environment and the opportunity to apply the geological skills and theories you have learnt.

STUDY ABROAD

In between years two and three of your studies you can choose to spend time studying abroad. This exciting opportunity will enable you to understand your field from different cultural perspectives and to establish international networks. It also shows you have the personal attributes to embrace new experiences which can enhance your employability. We offer exchange opportunities with a wide variety of partner institutions.

STUDENT SUPPORT

We offer a multi layered student support structure to help you meet your academic and personal needs. Our open-door policy enables you to engage with us directly, meaning you can seek support, gain feedback or discuss any matters on a regular basis. You will benefit from the support of the dedicated Faculty Student Experience and Support team who offer advice, guidance and one to one support. Additionally you will be assigned an academic mentor who will support you throughout your degree.
