Program Description

OVERVIEW

Geographers understand the complexity of the natural world, monitor how it changes and use this information to address some of the world’s most pressing issues such as climate change, biodiversity loss, water resource management, pollution, and natural hazards. Our Geography BSc will enable you to learn about the impact of climate change on society and the systems and processes that shape our Earth and its landscapes. From glacial and coastal environments to the lakes and ecosystems upon which we rely, you will explore how we can manage and protect natural resources including water, energy and soils.

YEAR ONE

The first year of the programme is carefully designed to bring together the diverse learning experiences across the cohort. From climate change, landscapes, ecosystems, sea level, glaciers and coastal environments to human's impact on the environment to the challenges faced by contemporary societies, you will cover a thorough grounding in both human and physical geography. To help you develop the appropriate learning skills and subject-specific practical skills required for success in the field of geography, you will complete a 'core skills' module.Skill development topics may include:
  • Fieldwork in both laboratory and field-based environments
  • Risk assessment and research ethics
  • Programming
  • Statistics
  • Data capture and analysis
  • Writing and communication

YEAR TWO

From year two you will develop an appreciation of the dynamic and research-based nature of the discipline by learning how to use geographical evidence to explain features of the physical environment. This will include training in the use of industry-standard GIS (Geographical Information Systems) software. From regional land systems to training in essential field, laboratory and employability skills - core modules will build your knowledge and skills in the physical geography. You will also have the opportunity to select from a variety of optional modules that will broaden your depth of knowledge in complementary topics such as space and society.

YEAR THREE

Your studies will culminate with the opportunity to personalise your learning to your career aspirations and interests. In addition to core modules you can choose from a diverse grouping of subjects. Module content may include: coastal environments, health inequalities, animals and society and global environmental change. You will also complete a final year geography project, where you can unleash your creativity and apply the techniques you have acquired throughout your studies. Under the guidance of an experienced academic, you can choose your own project topic or explore one of our research themes.

LEARN FROM OUR CAMPUS - OUR OWN LIVING LABORATORY

Our unique 600-acre rural campus is a fantastic natural environment to test new ideas, discover solutions to problems and bring your learning to life. From taking soil samples and surveying, to looking at water quality - Keele's diverse habitats and environments enable you to learn in an authentic environment whilst practicing sustainably.

FIELDWORK

Fieldwork opportunities are fully integrated into the curriculum to enable you to apply your theoretical knowledge to the real world. These practical experiences provide you with the opportunity to develop and refine the skills required for a career within industry. Learn about the processes that shape our world and explore landscapes produced by human impacts, glaciers, rivers, estuaries and lakes. You will investigate how landscapes are changing by using key techniques and collecting and analysing data. In previous years our students have undertaken field courses in the UK to the Lake District and localities around Staffordshire and overseas destinations including Barcelona and Iceland.

SPEND A YEAR IN INDUSTRY

In an increasingly competitive job market, employers are seeking to recruit employees who have high-level knowledge, skills and an understanding of the workplace. Between years two and three of your degree, you can spend a year gaining practical experience with a geography-related company or organisation. This will benefit you by providing familiarisation with the professional working environment and the opportunity to apply the skills and theories you have learnt during your studies.

STUDY ABROAD

In between years two and three of your degree, you can choose to spend a semester or year studying abroad. This exciting opportunity enables you to experience different cultural perspectives and to establish international networks. It also shows you have the personal attributes to embrace new experiences which can enhance your employability. We offer exchange opportunities with a wide variety of partner institutions.

SUPPORT

We offer a multi layered support structure to help you meet your academic and personal needs. Our student-first approach enables you to engage with us directly, meaning you can seek support, gain feedback or discuss any matters related to your course on a regular basis. You will benefit from the support of an assigned academic mentor and a member of staff from Keele's Student Experience and Support team.

SOCIETIES

We have a wealth of student-led societies at Keele which cover a diverse range of interests. Joining a society related to geography is a great opportunity to continue to develop your skills away from your studies. This is another excellent way of demonstrating your genuine interest for the area and can be beneficial when it comes to applying for graduate roles.
