Program Description

Our Forensic Science and Human Biology BSc will provide you with a breadth of knowledge and diverse skills across two exciting subject areas.

The forensic science element of the course focuses on the entire forensic process, from evidence collection, analysis and interpretation to court reporting. Initial modules will build your understanding in the key topics underpinning the subject, including forensic chemistry, forensic biology and criminalistic science. You will also gain valuable laboratory and crime scene experience to help you stay ahead in this fast-moving science. Teaching will take place in Keele's state-of-the-art Central Science Laboratories and our dedicated Crime Scene facilities. The programme will culminate with the opportunity to unleash your creativity and apply the techniques you have acquired throughout your studies by completing a final year forensic science team research project.

Final year project topics from previous students include:
  • Analysis of post-mortem bone trauma
  • Analysis of trace evidence -identification of drugs in latent fingerprints
  • Long-term geophysical monitoring of simulated clandestine graves of murder victims
  • Wildlife forensics –assessment of presumptive tests on non-human blood
  • Forensic odontology -bite marks
  • Investigating the appearance of aged fingerprints
For the human biology element of the course you will explore the physiology of the body’s major systems, human health, disease and the relationship between the human body with the environment. From exploring how our lifestyle and genes affect our risk of disease to discovering the latest developments in cancer research, you will have the opportunity to deep dive into a broad range of topics that are of increasing importance in medical research and underpin the biotechnology and pharmaceutical industries.

Throughout your first and second year, you will take practical classes in our state-of-the-art Central Science Laboratories and the School of Life Sciences' David Attenborough Laboratories. This will develop the practical, analytical, observational and interpretative skills needed for a career in the biosciences. As you progress through your degree you will use case-based learning and work within a group to investigate real life applications of human biology in the diagnosis, treatment and management of human disease. You will also complete a practical, innovative mini-project where you will design, package, market an assay kit. Your final year provides the opportunity to study a variety of optional modules including a research project. Throughout your project you will be supported and supervised by an academic who has expertise in your chosen area of study.

LEARN FROM OUR CAMPUS - OUR OWN 'LIVING AND NATURAL LABORATORY'

From recovering evidence in our indoor and outdoor crime scene facilities to replica skeletal remains within the grounds of Keele woods, our unique 600-acre campus offers a fantastic environment to apply your theoretical knowledge to real-life scenarios you may encounter within forensic investigation. These practical experiences will also provide you with the opportunity to develop and refine the methods and techniques that are integral to work within the field.

In human biology the flexible modular course structure allows you to tailor your programme of study to individual interests and career aspirations. For example, you may have the opportunity to choose a module in environmental biology. In this module you will attend a summer field course where you will visit a range of terrestrial and aquatic habitats and develop fieldwork skills such as identification of specimens, surveying, and data analysis.

INTERNATIONAL YEAR

In between years two and three of your studies you may choose to spend a year studying abroad. This exciting opportunity will enable you to understand your field from different cultural perspectives and to establish international networks. It also shows you have the personal attributes to embrace new experiences which can enhance your employability. We offer exchange opportunities with a wide variety of partner institutions.

WORK PLACEMENT YEAR IN HUMAN BIOLOGY

In an increasingly competitive job market, employers are seeking to recruit employees who have high-level knowledge, skills and an understanding of the workplace. In the human biology component of your studies, you will have the opportunity to spend a year gaining work experience in a related field. This can provide you with a deep insight into what the work is like within the field. From a year working in industry and paid internships to summer secondment research placements, our programme offers many opportunities for you to gain familiarisation with the professional working environment, develop professional contacts and apply the skills and theories you have learnt.

STUDENT SUPPORT

We offer a multi layered student support structure to help you meet your academic and personal needs. Our open-door policy enables you to engage with us directly, meaning you can seek support, gain feedback or discuss any matters. You will benefit from the support of an assigned personal tutor and Keele's dedicated Faculty Student Experience and Support team.

SOCIETIES

We have a wealth of student-led societies here at Keele which cover a diverse range of interests. Joining a society related to forensic science and human biology is a great opportunity to continue to develop your skills away from your studies. This is another excellent way of demonstrating your genuine interest for the area and can be beneficial when it comes to applying for graduate roles.
