Program Description

English Literature and Psychology at Keele enables you to build key analytical skills in research and analysis, with the ability to present your ideas and findings through various methods, as well as studying works of literature that will help you to develop your critical thinking and your understanding of the society in which we live.You will explore literature from Shakespeare to the contemporary and examine literature in English from across the world, including Britain, North America and Africa, taking a truly global perspective. You will develop your knowledge and skills to contribute to some of the most crucial debates of our time regarding such issues as decolonisation, sustainability and the environment, gender and sexuality, and political extremism.Taught by expert lecturers in English Literature, you will explore and interpret literary works that will challenge your views, advance your tastes, prompt your creativity, and give you the opportunity to become a versatile graduate. Through a range of activities and assessments, this diverse course will equip you with a vast array of attributes that employers are looking for, including creativity, emotional intelligence, and digital literacy.Psychology will equip you with a well-rounded education and in addition to studying the principal areas specified by the British Psychological Society (BPS) curriculum, you will have the opportunity to tailor your degree to reflect your career aspirations and interests.Principle areas of psychology include: biological, cognitive, social and developmental psychology as well as individual differences and historical issues. You will gain fundamental scientific skills in research design, statistics, qualitative and survey methods. With this knowledge, you will learn how to conduct research and critically analyse that of others.The skills you will develop on this degree will not only equip you with subject-specific knowledge but will provide you with a variety of transferable scientific and humanities based skills that can be used in a wide range of sectors.

WORK PLACEMENTS IN ENGLISH LITERATURE
The School of Humanities hosts work placement optional modules that allow you to engage with potential future employers whilst being supported by academic and career advisors to design and complete a programme of work in partnership with a workplace.Alumni have previously taken work placements in museums, schools, charities and archives, enhancing their career prospects upon graduation. In addition to your time at your chosen organisation, you will engage with taught sessions that focus on how to articulate your skillset to an employer and also be encouraged to reflect upon your experiences to identify how you can apply your learnings to your studies and beyond.You may also choose to participate in the Undergraduate Research Opportunities Programme, and gain first-hand experience of professional academic research through a project in which you will work alongside an academic within the School of Humanities.
WORK PLACEMENT IN PSYCHOLOGY
You may have the opportunity to spend a year in industry with a relevant placement provider between 2nd and 3rd year. This will help prepare you for the workplace by becoming familiar with the professional working environment and having the opportunity to draw upon psychological principles, skills, theories, or methods. This is a valuable, character-building experience where your will develop both personally and professionally, enhancing your career prospects.Please note: If you wish to undertake a work placement year, you will be required to choose a placement aligned to either English Literature or Psychology.

RESEARCH-ACTIVE COMMUNITY IN PSYCHOLOGY

Teaching in psychology is driven by research and you will learn about some of the latest topics in the field.Research within the School of Psychology is supported by four research groups: the Cognition, Brain, & Behaviour Research Group, the Developmental Psychology Research Group, the Social Psychological Research Group, and the Health and Well-being Research Group.In addition, there is a Children and Young People Research Network, and various members of the school are engaged in interdisciplinary research, including the Keele Policing Collaboration (KPAC), the Keele Centre for Aging Research (KCAR), and projects with colleagues in Health, Social Sciences and Humanities disciplines.

ENGAGE WITH REAL-WORLD PROJECTS

During your degree programme, you may have the opportunity to work on research, led by staff, PhD and master's students in the School of Psychology. This is a fantastic opportunity for you to learn about research methods and gain insight into the diversity of research carried out within the School of Psychology.

FINAL YEAR PROJECT IN PSYCHOLOGY

In your final year you will have the opportunity to work with one of our expert academics to carry out and report an investigation of a research topic that aligns with your career aspirations or personal interests.Final year project topics from previous Psychology students include:

SUMMER RESEARCH ASSISTANTSHIP SCHEME

The School of Psychology offers a summer research assistantship scheme that is a paid opportunity during your second or third year of study. This scheme involves working alongside a member of staff on a research project and gaining valuable skills and experience in data analysis, that can help you to stand out from the crowd when applying for employment or postgraduate study.Please note there is an application process for this scheme and the number of projects available will vary each year.

  • CISCE / CBSE / West Bengal Class XII: 60% - 90% required depending on course. Subjects Requirements : - English with 60% All other State Boards Higher Secondary Certificate (HSC) / Standard Class XII: 65% - 95% required depending on course.Subjects Requirements : - Maths with 70% and English with 60% 2 years of study must have been completed.
  • For IELTS Waiver : CISCE/CBSE Class XII: 70% or above. All other State Boards Class XII (except Punjab or Mohali School Education Board): 75% or above in English, depending on course.Study should be taught in English. Otherwise IELTS is required.
