Program Description

WHY STUDY COMPUTER SCIENCE AT KEELE?

Our teaching is informed by research and our course content is are kept up-to-date thanks to close interaction with our Industry Advisory Board. You will learn the key themes that underpin contemporary computer science, from programming best practices to the use of the latest tools and technology.

COURSE STRUCTURE

In your first year you will explore the fundamental concepts and techniques for object-oriented programming. Our initial modules are designed to bring everyone up to speed, regardless of the starting level of coding experience, and to provide a gentle introduction to the skills required for effective academic study.

You will then move on to learn advanced programming concepts that can be applied in areas such as games programming, mobile app and web development, artificial intelligence and cyber security, not disregarding the human aspect of Computer Science thanks to the focus on user interaction and user interface design, software engineering methodologies (SCRUM, Agile) and cutting edge research in AI and machine learning.

We aim to ensure you have the necessary skillset for a successful career within the field of computing and in your final year you will have the opportunity to further specialise in advanced topics and to work on a final year project where you can unleash your creativity and apply the techniques you have acquired throughout your studies.

From a year working in industry to paid internships, summer research projects and practical modules, there are many opportunities available throughout the curriculum to develop and enhance your practical skills. Paid or voluntary experience in your area of interest will not only demonstrate your commitment and passion, but will also enable you to make meaningful connections by networking with experts in the field.

This is another excellent way of demonstrating your genuine interest for the area and can be beneficial when it comes to applying for graduate roles.

FLEXIBILITY TO SUIT YOUR INTERESTS

Our programme is highly flexible as you can tailor the degree to suit your individual preferences. Our specialised pathways enable you to focus in the areas of artificial intelligence, cyber security, digital forensics, games, software engineering, and web and app development. By choosing a bracketed degree, you will gain recognition of your specialism in the title of your final award. Computer Science is also available as a Combined Honours degree and a four year Integrated Master's. As we recognise that your aspirations and interests in the field of Computer Science may develop as you are exposed to the diverse themes throughout the programme. We offer you the opportunity to transfer between our programmes before year two of your studies, to give you the time and space to find your passion (so long as any compulsory modules of the new programme have been taken).

Other Requirements

  • CISCE / CBSE / West Bengal Class XII: 60% - 90% required depending on course. Subjects Requirements : - Maths with 60% and English with 60% All other State Boards Higher Secondary Certificate (HSC) / Standard Class XII: 65% - 95% required depending on course.Subjects Requirements : - Maths with 70% and English with 60% 2 years of study must have been completed.
  • For IELTS Waiver : CISCE/CBSE Class XII: 70% or above. All other State Boards Class XII (except Punjab or Mohali School Education Board): 75% or above in English, depending on course.Study should be taught in English. Otherwise IELTS is required.
