Program Description
OVERVIEW
From the technology we use to how we treat illnesses, chemistry is essential to our modern life and offers a wide variety of career opportunities in many fields from pharmaceuticals and food technology to forensics and teaching. Our accredited Chemistry BSc will provide you with a solid grounding in the underpinning theory of the subject, plenty of hands-on practical experience in Keele's state-of-the-art laboratories and the opportunity to personalise your learning and advance your research skills by undertaking an independent research project in your final year.YEAR ONE
In your first year you will develop the skills to enable you to become a professional chemist. You will build a strong grounding in core chemistry knowledge and we will carefully guide you in understanding the mathematics underpinning the subject. Particular attention is paid to building your practical skills and you will have access to various types of research-standard equipment that you are likely to use within your career in chemistry. This includes equiment such as ultra-violet visible spectroscopy which is used to follow the rate of reactions of molecules that contain chromophores. To provide context to the knowledge you are learning, you will also look at ways in which chemistry is applied to sustainable development and the environment. You will examine the political, social and economic impacts and explore topics like nuclear chemistry and energy, geochemistry, health and toxicology and green chemistry.
YEAR TWO
Year two continues to build on developing your theoretical knowledge and practical skills. You will start studying more in depth spectroscopic techniques for analytical and physical chemistry, as well as named reactions for chemical synthesis. This is embedded in your practicals, during which you will learn advanced experimental techniques including handling air-sensitive reagents. To develop your appreciation of the wider context of the subject, through our optional modules you can explore the economic, international and sustainability issues surrounding industrial chemistry or study the principles of drug design by beginning on our medicinal chemistry pathway.YEAR THREE
In your final year, you will take a deep dive into core advanced modules including physical and inorganic chemistry, organic chemistry and a wide range of analytical techniques and their applications to solving problems. You will also have the opportunity to align your degree to your career aspirations and interests by choosing from a variety of optional modules and completing a final year chemistry project and dissertation in an area of your choice. The chemistry project will specifically develop your experimental skills and your ability to work independently in the laboratory, with the dissertation focusing on developing your non-experimental research skills by applying and developing your knowledge and understanding of a specific aspect of chemistry.SPEND A YEAR IN INDUSTRY
In an increasingly competitive job market, employers are seeking to recruit employees who have high-level knowledge, skills and an understanding of the workplace. In between year two and three of your studies, you will have the opportunity to spend time gaining practical experience with a chemistry-focused company or organisation. This will enable you to apply the chemistry skills and theories you have learnt to real situations in the industrial workplace. You will develop key professional skills such as the accurate documentation of information; the analysis of chemical data and the planning and safe operation of chemical processes. You will also enhance your employability skills in the presentation and communication of data, the writing of reports, and the ability to work effectively independently, and as part of a team. Work experience in your area of interest will not only demonstrate your commitment and passion, but will also enable you to make meaningful connections by networking with experts in the field.FLEXIBILITY TO SUIT YOUR INTERESTS
We recognise that your aspirations and interests in the field of chemistry may develop as you are exposed to the diverse themes throughout the programme. Our programme is highly flexible and there is the option to switch to combined and integrated master's programmes during your studies - specific marks and thresholds apply.INTERNATIONAL YEAR
This exciting opportunity enables you to understand education from different cultural perspectives and to establish international networks. It also shows you have the personal attributes to embrace new experiences which can enhance your employability. We offer exchange opportunities with a wide variety of partner institutions.
SUPPORT
We offer a multi layered support structure to help you meet your academic and personal needs. Our open-door policy enables you to engage with us directly, meaning you can seek support, gain feedback or discuss any matters related to the course. You will also benefit from the support of an academic mentor and Keele's dedicated Faculty Student Experience and Support team.Other Requirements
