Program Description
Biomedical science explores how cells, organs and systems function in the human body and this area is at the heart of innovation and discovery in modern day medicine. You will explore the range of diseases and disorders that can affect our body and develop the skills to diagnose and treat disease effectively. The interdisciplinary skills gained on this course will prepare you for a variety of careers such as a biomedical scientist, medical writer or research scientist.INTERDISCIPLINARY COURSE STRUCTURE
As our programme is accredited by the professional body for biomedical scientists, principal areas of study (set by the Institute of Biomedical Science) focus on developing the skills needed to work within a hospital environment as a biomedical scientist. Graduates of our Biomedical Science programme often go on to pursue a diverse range of careers, so we have developed an authentic multi-disciplinary approach to the delivery of the programme. Instead of offering a module in each of the disciplines within pathology, we look at how each of the disciplines relate to each other. This means you will develop a wide and broad skill-set that employers are looking for.YEAR ONE
The first year of the programme is carefully designed to bring together the diverse learning experiences across the cohort to equip you with a solid grounding in the core biological topics and skills that underpin biomedical science. You will explore how the body works and study modules including physiology and anatomy, biochemistry, molecular cell biology and clinical applications of biomedical science. To equip you with the scientific core skills needed for a career in the biosciences, during your first and second year, you will take laboratory classes most weeks to develop your practical, analytical, observational and interpretative skills.YEAR TWO
Year two shifts focus to examine what can go wrong with the human body. You will explore topics such as how the body copes with infection and changes in metabolism associated with disease and develop practical techniques in the study of biological samples. You will also have the opportunity to enhance your learning by spending time studying abroad or gaining invaluable work experience in industry.YEAR THREE
Your final year provides the opportunity to unleash your creativity and undertake an independent student research project (ISP). We have a wide range of ISPs to choose form, including lab-based, field-based, systematic reviews, bioinformatics, teaching and learning and outreach projects. From biomedical engineering to clinical pathology - the diverse research specialties within the programme will enable you to focus on a topic related to biomedical science or from other disciplines across the university. You may also carry out your research project whilst on placement. Our 6-month industrial placement offers a fantastic opportunity to get a taste of what it is like to work, often independently, in a real research/industrial environment. Please note this is subject to availability.INTERNATIONAL YEAR
In an increasingly competitive job market, employers are seeking to recruit employees who have high-level knowledge, skills and an understanding of the workplace. If you're unsure which area of biomedical science you want to focus on, work experience may provide you with a deep insight into what the work is like within a chosen field. From a year working in industry and paid internships to summer secondment research placements in the UK or overseas, our programme offers many opportunities for you to familiarise yourself with the professional working environment, develop professional contacts and apply the skills and theories you have learnt.SPEND A YEAR STUDYING ABROAD
In between years two and three of your studies you can choose to spend time studying abroad. This exciting opportunity enable you to understand your field from different cultural perspectives and to establish international networks. It also shows you have the personal attributes to embrace new experiences which can enhance your employability. We offer exchange opportunities with a wide variety of partner institutions.SUPPORT
We offer a multi layered support structure to help you meet your academic and personal needs. Our open-door policy enables you to engage with us directly, meaning you can seek support, gain feedback or discuss any matters on a regular basis. You will benefit from the support of the dedicated Faculty Student Experience and Support team who offer advice, guidance and one to one support to students within the School of Life Sciences. Additionally you will be assigned a academic mentor who will support you throughout your degree.PRACTICAL SUPPORT
During practical workshops you will benefit from a multi-tiered support structure. In addition to your lead lecturer you can engage with a variety of academic and non-academic staff. This offers an invaluable opportunity to establish new networks and gain insight into news or research taking place within the school.Benefit from networking opportunities with:- Senior demonstrators
- Postgraduate student demonstrators
- Laboratory technicians
- Core skills videos and laboratory simulations
- Data analysis workshops
