Program Description

Studying a combined honours Biology and Data Science BSc will give you the opportunity to develop a breadth of knowledge and a wide range of skills in two fascinating subjects.

Most of society's global challenges are connected to biology - from assessing the effect of medication on the human body to exploring methods to prevent species extinction. Studying Biology covers a range of fundamentals, as well as topics including physiology and anatomy, ecology and plant biology, and viruses and parasites.

In data science you will explore the fundamental concepts underlying the analysis of complex data together with techniques for applying these using a contemporary programming language. You will look at data science and its relationship with business analytics, statistics, machine learning and artificial intelligence and examine the processes techniques used to extract information from raw data. Building on the knowledge you have learnt in both subjects, you will progress to explore advanced topics in your second and third years. From AI, data visualisation and deep learning, to investigating the real life applications of biology in the diagnosis, treatment and management of disease - you will develop the advanced knowledge and skills to carry out your own independent studies.

STUDY ABROAD

In between years two and three of your studies you can choose to spend time studying abroad. This exciting opportunity will enable you to understand your field from different cultural perspectives and to establish international networks. It also shows you have the personal attributes to embrace new experiences which can enhance your employability. We offer exchange opportunities with a wide variety of partner institutions.

STUDENT SUPPORT

You will benefit from the guidance of an assigned academic mentor and access to Keele's Student Experience and Support team.We offer a multi layered student support structure to help you meet your academic and personal needs. Our open-door policy enables you to engage with us directly, meaning you can seek support, gain feedback or discuss any matters related to your course on a regular basis. In Data Science, experienced students and doctoral researchers usually run help-desk sessions to help with the use and configuration of software especially when exam and coursework deadlines get closer.

SOCIETIES

We have a wealth of student-led societies which cover a diverse range of interests. Joining a society related to your field is a great opportunity to continue to develop your skills away from your studies. This is another excellent way of demonstrating your genuine interest for the area and can be beneficial when it comes to applying for graduate roles. It’s also a great way to meet like-minded people, make friends and share interests with fellow students.
