Program Description
COURSE OVERVIEW
Most of society's global challenges are connected to biology - from assessing the effect of medication on the human body to exploring methods to prevent species extinction. The flexibility embedded into our programme structure enables you to adopt an interdisciplinary approach to biology, or focus on a specialism closely aligned to your career aspirations and interests. Our Single Honours programme weaves three key themes of animal biology, environmental ecology and conservation, and human biology through its structure. From year two, you can choose to either focus on one of these areas in more detail or combine modules on different topics to give a broader view of the biological world.CORE SKILLS TRAINING
To equip you with the scientific skills needed for a career in the biosciences, you will have access to our state-of-the-art David Attenborough Laboratories. Throughout your first and second year, you will take laboratory classes most weeks to develop your practical, analytical, observational and interpretative skills.PRACTICAL SUPPORT
During practical workshops you will benefit from a multi-tiered support structure. In addition to your lead lecturer you can engage with a variety of academic staff. This offers an invaluable opportunity to forge new networks and gain insight into news or research taking place within the school.Benefit from networking opportunities with:
- Senior demonstrators
- Postgraduate student demonstrators
- Laboratory technicians
YEAR ONE
The first year of the programme is carefully designed to enable common understanding of the fundamentals of biology that underpin the areas of biological study you will go on to explore in more detail in years two and three. You will study modules such as animal biology, physiology and anatomy, ecology and plant biology, and the fundamentals of biology. To help you develop the practical skills required in the study of a bioscience degree, you will complete a 'core skills' module. The module will advance your laboratory and field skills and enable you to gain hands-on experience in a range of preparative, analytical and observational procedures, working on practicals some on your own and some as part of a group.YEAR TWO
You will apply some of the theoretical knowledge acquired in year one, by participating in a summer field course on Keele campus. This will involve visiting a range of terrestrial and aquatic habitats and developing fieldwork skills such as identification of specimens, surveying, and data analysis.Towards the end of the field course you will work in a group to undertake a research project. This assessment is an excellent preparation for your final year project. You will also examine modules such as animal behaviour and microbes, viruses and parasites and have the opportunity to choose from a variety of optional modules that are aligned to your interests in the field.YEAR THREE
Your final year provides the opportunity to apply the knowledge and skills acquired over the previous two years and produce a final year research project - which may be carried out whilst on placement. Throughout your project you will be supported and supervised by an academic who has expertise in your chosen area of study. This is a fantastic opportunity to integrate your personal passions and examine them from a biological perspective. You will also take part in a final year conference where you will present your research findings through posters and presentations to a diverse audience including employers. Communicating scientific findings in an effective manner that is appropriate for target audiences is a key skill in the biosciences and one that will prepare you well for your future career.ENGAGE WITH EXPERTS FROM ACROSS THE UNIVERSITY
The interdisciplinary module content delivered within the programme means you will benefit from academic expertise across the university. From clinical practitioners to nationwide leading educators - you will have the opportunity to forge networks with staff from a variety of different disciplines.GAIN PRACTICAL EXPERIENCE IN INDUSTRY
In an increasingly competitive job market, employers are seeking to recruit employees who have high-level knowledge, skills and an understanding of the workplace. If you're unsure which area of biology you want to focus on, work experience can provide insight into what work is like in a specific field. From a year working in industry and paid internships to summer secondment research placements in the UK or overseas, our programme offers many opportunities to gain familiarisation with the professional working environment, develop professional contacts and apply the biological skills and theories you have learnt.STUDY ABROAD
In between years two and three of your studies you can choose to spend time studying abroad. This exciting opportunity enables you to understand your field from different cultural perspectives and to establish international networks. There is also an opportunity to study tropical biology on a field course in Malaysia. This is an optional course with additional costs and it takes place in the summer between years two and three. It also shows you have the personal attributes to embrace new experiences which can enhance your employability. We offer exchange opportunities with a wide variety of partner institutions.SUPPORT
We offer a multi layered support structure to help you meet your academic and personal needs. Our open-door policy enables you to engage with us directly, meaning you can seek support, gain feedback or discuss any matters relating to your course on a regular basis. You will also benefit from the support of a academic mentor and Keele's Student Experience and Support team.Other Requirements
