Program Description

Studying Astrophysics and Data Science provides you with the opportunity to develop a broad range of skills and knowledge in two compelling subjects.

In astrophysics you will apply physics to understanding how the universe works and possibly explore questions like is there an Earth-like planet around another star? Is there a black hole at the centre of every galaxy? And why is the expansion of the Universe accelerating?

Data science aims to shape you into a graduate with sound mathematical fundamentals allied with comprehensive computational skills. Virtually every industry is looking to leverage the power of data to enhance the efficiency of their operations and drive innovation. This means graduates with data science skills are in extremely high demand.

Astrophysics will give you the quantitative and analytic skills needed for analysing data and solving problems and is underpinned by a core physics curriculum as set out by the Institute of Physics. This includes the fundamentals of classical and quantum mechanics, electromagnetism, optics, thermodynamics, solid state, atomic and nuclear physics, together with the mathematics that is used to describe them. We have our own observatory here at Keele that students on this combined honours programme can get involved with on a volunteer basis with the potential to learn some astronomical techniques.

As you progress, you will build on your existing knowledge in familiar core areas of astrophysics including mechanics, special relativity, nature of matter and gravitation, electricity, oscillations and waves. You will also learn the basics of stellar structure and stellar astrophysics. Later in your degree you will study electromagnetism at a deeper level, and have the option of studying cosmology, binary stellar systems and exoplanets, black holes and gravitational waves in different modules.

Our innovative data science curriculum is informed by industry as well as research and assumes no prior knowledge of A-level Mathematics or Statistics. Rather we strive to arm all students with a carefully tailored package of mathematical skills. You will study a measured blend of theoretical knowledge and practical experience to ensure you graduate ready to apply your skills into the workplace or further study.

You will gain an understanding of the fundamental principles of data science and develop your skills and knowledge into new and exciting areas such as AI, data visualisation and deep learning. For example you will learn how to deal with uncertainties in large data sets and how to develop appropriate statistical models. This means you will not just be able to use the techniques in data science, but you will have a comprehensive understanding of the underpinning theories that support them. Other modules may include areas of data science like Bioinformatics, Game Theory and Medical Statistics. Core knowledge is also developed in new areas such as Data Mining and Machine Learning. Our flexible curriculum also offers a wide variety of optional modules that are suited to your career aspirations and interests.

INDUSTRY-INFORMED PROGRAMME

Designed with input from a dedicated industry advisory group, the data science component of the programme is tailored to include the skills, knowledge and behaviour needed for you to graduate ready for the workplace or further study. From a year working in industry to paid internships and practical modules, we offer many ways for you to enhance your employability and develop your practical skills in the field of data science.

INTERNATIONAL YEAR

In between years two and three of your studies you can choose to spend a year studying abroad. This exciting opportunity enables you to experience different cultures and to establish international networks. It also shows you have the personal attributes to embrace new experiences which can enhance your employability. We offer exchange opportunities with a wide variety of partner institutions.

PERSONALISED LEARNING

Our small cohort size enables you to gain a more personalised learning experience and as a result we will have the resource to get to know you better and give you customised guidance throughout your studies.

SUPPORT

We offer a multi layered support structure to help you meet your academic and personal needs. This includes regular tutorials, a dedicated academic mentor and access to Keele's dedicated Faculty Student Experience and Support team. In the Data Science component of the programme experienced students and doctoral researchers usually run help-desk sessions to assist with the use and configuration of software - especially when exam and coursework deadlines get closer.

SOCIETIES

We have a wealth of student-led societies here at Keele which cover a diverse range of interests. Joining a society related to astrophysics or data science is a great opportunity to continue to develop your skills away from your studies. This is another excellent way of demonstrating your genuine interest for the area and can be beneficial when it comes to applying for graduate roles. It’s also a great way to make friends and share interests with fellow students.

COMMITTED TO EQUALITY, DIVERSITY AND GENDER EQUALITY

We are committed to equality, diversity and inclusion. This means we aim to create a diverse and inclusive culture in which you can thrive. Our Equality, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) agenda is embedded throughout our Data Science curriculum, and we are proud that the School of Computer Science and Mathematics holds an Athena SWAN Bronze Award in recognition for our activities in this area.
