Program Description

OVERVIEW

Geography is uniquely positioned between the physical and social sciences enabling geographers to provide broad-ranging perspectives on a range of key societal challenges. It explores the spatial interactions between human behaviours and society and the interrelationships between the environment and political, economic and social forces. The flexibility of our programme enables you to explore the full breadth and depth of this dynamic discipline. Depending on where your interests lie, you can focus on physical geography, human geography or a mixture of both. Our focus on climate change, global responsibility, sustainability, and the application of professional geographical skills to real-world situations will prepare you for a wide range of careers and for life as a responsible global citizen.

YEAR ONE

The first year of the programme is carefully designed to bring together the diverse learning experiences across the cohort. From human behaviours that have shaped, and continue to shape natural and built environments, to social inequalities in physical and economic health and wellbeing, you will cover a thorough grounding in both human and physical geography. To help you develop the appropriate learning skills and subject-specific practical skills required for success in the field of geography, you will complete a 'core skills' module. Skill development topics may include:
  • Fieldwork in both laboratory and field-based environments
  • Risk assessment and research ethics
  • Programming
  • Statistics
  • Techniques of data capture
  • Writing and communication

YEAR TWO

In year two, you will develop an appreciation of the dynamic and research-based nature of the discipline and will learn how to use geographical evidence to explain the spatial interactions between human behaviours and society. From debates concerning the relationship between space and society to training in a variety of essential field, laboratory and employability skills -core modules will build your knowledge and skills in human geography. You will also have the opportunity to personalise your learning to your career aspirations or interests by choosing from a variety of optional modules in topics such as geoscience and society and human impact on the environment, scientific perspectives.

YEAR THREE

Your studies will culminate with the opportunity to mould your degree to your career aspirations and interests. You will unleash your creativity and apply the techniques you have acquired throughout your studies by working on a final year geography project. Under the guidance of an experienced academic, you can choose your own topic or explore one of our research themes.

Examples of previous dissertation topics include:
  • Rave spaces surviving the pandemic: a study of Sheffield dance music clubs and their respective communities
  • To what extent are fan zones outside football stadia inclusionary or exclusionary spaces?
