Program Description

As an English Literature and Philosophy student at Keele, you will immerse yourself in literature from Shakespeare to the contemporary world, and engage with big questions about right and wrong, human life, the nature of reality.On this combined honours programme, you will examine literature in English from across the world, including Britain, North America and Africa, taking a truly global perspective. Taught by expert lecturers in the School of Humanities, you will explore and interpret literary texts that will challenge your views, advance your tastes, prompt your creativity, and give you the opportunity to become a versatile graduate. Through a range of activities and assessments, this diverse course will equip you with a vast array of attributes that employers are looking for, including problem solving, creativity, emotional intelligence, and digital literacy.In Philosophy you will study texts, think about ideas and formulate your own philosophical theories. You will explore central themes such as moral and political philosophy, logic, epistemology, and the philosophies of mind, religion and science. You will consider key philosophical problems about the nature of the world and the mind and various solutions proposed.You’ll learn about different philosophical traditions past and present, including Anglo-American, Indian, Buddhist, Greek, French and German philosophy. You’ll enhance your logical and critical thinking skills, and develop the use of sound arguments to defend your views, while detecting fallacies and other argumentative weaknesses.

WORK PLACEMENTS

Our second and third-year work placement optional modules in the School of Humanities allow you to engage with potential future employers whilst being supported by academic and career advisors to design and complete a programme of work in partnership with a workplace. Alumni have previously taken work placements in museums, schools, charities and archives, enhancing their career prospects upon graduation. In addition to your time at your chosen organisation, you will engage with taught sessions that focus on how to articulate your skillset to an employer and also be encouraged to reflect upon your experiences to identify how you can apply your learnings to your studies and beyond.
WORK PLACEMENT YEAR
On this course, you will have the opportunity to opt for a Work Placement Year in either subject between Year 2 and 3. This will allow you to apply your knowledge and practical skills in a relevant workplace environment enabling you to build key skills in communication, teamwork and project management. You will be able to demonstrate your abilities and creative thinking, working with fellow professionals as well as independently.Our staff will support you in preparing to apply for a work placement that suits your interests and career prospects with advice on CV writing and cover letters, as well as the chance to attend Q&A workshops to discuss individual experiences with alumni and employers. This opportunity is a valuable, character-building experience that will allow you to develop both personally and professionally during your studies and will assist you in your employment after university.

Hear from guest speakers about their philosophical research and engage in thought-provoking discussions with peers and visitors from other universities. Other Requirements

  • CISCE / CBSE / West Bengal Class XII: 60% - 90% required depending on course. Subjects Requirements : - English with 60% All other State Boards Higher Secondary Certificate (HSC) / Standard Class XII: 65% - 95% required depending on course.Subjects Requirements : - Maths with 70% and English with 60% 2 years of study must have been completed.
  • For IELTS Waiver : CISCE/CBSE Class XII: 70% or above. All other State Boards Class XII (except Punjab or Mohali School Education Board): 75% or above in English, depending on course.Study should be taught in English. Otherwise IELTS is required.
