Program Description

Education and History at Keele explores the nature of learning including core elements such as policy, teaching and practice, whilst investigating the past and key influences that have shaped global history such as social, economic, political, and cultural forces.On this combined honours programme, you will actively engage with discussions around various topics such as psychological, sociological and cultural influences in education, and consider how these may evolve in the future. You will explore key issues and challenges associated with teaching and learning at different levels, such as primary and secondary.You will learn to critically evaluate what education means to individuals and to consider important scenarios around the roles and responsibilities of teachers. You will explore how children learn and analyse contemporary assessment methods. This will involve the consideration of key factors such as age, the support a student may receive in a range of educational settings, as well as the influence of technology that plays a crucial role in their learning.Throughout this combined honours programme you will build awareness of how the education sector operates and become familiar with the communication between students and teachers as well as the collaboration between professionals in the workplace. You will explore the ways in which teaching is delivered and consider classroom behaviour amongst students and how they learn.History at Keele enables you to engage with academics who are experts across a diverse range of fields and periods of history. You will develop your knowledge, critical thinking, and analytical skills by studying a range of topics and learn how to research these areas effectively, how to critically interrogate evidence and reflect on pivotal moments in history. This will involve working both independently and as part of a team in order to broaden your knowledge and develop transferable skills that will allow you to interpret information from various sources critically and effectively.You will learn to appreciate the impact of events, forces, and processes on individual societies and the world as a whole.

WORK PLACEMENTS

In the School of Social, Political and Global Studies, you may have the opportunity to apply for a placement module to develop your knowledge and skills in professional environments. This may include opportunities to experience teaching and learning in Primary, Secondary and Special Educational Needs (SEN) schools.During this experience, you would observe and assist with classroom activities and develop your practical and professional skills in the company of professionals and learners in different age and development stages. We have a wide range of contacts with local schools in the area where you can gain this valuable hands-on experience in the education sector.Please note: There are limited spaces on this module.The School of Humanities hosts a ‘Work Placement in the Humanities’ module which provides you with the opportunity to apply for a placement within an organisation to further enhance your professional skills. With the guidance of module tutors, you will identify an organisation based on your interests, and will spend a semester engaging with projects and tasks set out by the employer. You may cover areas such as heritage, education, charity, marketing and management, as well as the creative industry. Our alumni have previously taken work placements in a range of settings including museums and schools. You will engage with taught sessions in addition to your time at your chosen organisation and will be encouraged to reflect upon your experiences to identify how you can apply your learnings throughout your studies and beyond.

WORK PLACEMENT YEAR

You may choose to apply for a Work Placement Year in either Education or History between Year 2 and 3. This will allow you to apply your knowledge and practical skills in a relevant workplace environment that suits your interests and career prospects, therefore enabling you to build key skills in communication, teamwork and project management. You will be able to demonstrate your abilities and creative thinking, working with fellow professionals as well as independently.You will be supported by staff to prepare for your placement with advice on CV writing and cover letters, as well as the chance to attend Q&A workshops to discuss individual experiences with alumni and employers. This is a valuable, character-building experience where you will develop both personally and professionally which will assist you in your employment after university.

Other Requirements

  • CISCE / CBSE / West Bengal Class XII: 60% - 90% required depending on course. Subjects Requirements : - Maths with 60% and English with 60% All other State Boards Higher Secondary Certificate (HSC) / Standard Class XII: 65% - 95% required depending on course.Subjects Requirements : - Maths with 70% and English with 60% 2 years of study must have been completed.
  • For IELTS Waiver : CISCE/CBSE Class XII: 70% or above. All other State Boards Class XII (except Punjab or Mohali School Education Board): 75% or above in English, depending on course.Study should be taught in English. Otherwise IELTS is required.
