Program Description

Education and English Literature at Keele explores the nature of learning and its key elements including policy, teaching and practice, whilst investigating literature from Shakespeare to contemporary times.On this combined honours course, you will actively engage in discussions around various topics such as psychological, sociological and cultural influences in education, and consider how these may evolve in the future. You will explore key issues and challenges associated with teaching and learning at different levels, such as primary and secondary.You will learn to critically evaluate what education means to individuals and to consider important scenarios around the roles and responsibilities of teachers. You will explore how children learn and analyse contemporary assessment methods. With this, you'll consider key factors such as age, the support a student may receive in a range of educational settings, as well as the influence of technology that plays a crucial role in their learning.This programme will help to build your awareness of how the education sector operates and your familiarisation with the communication between students and teachers, as well as the collaboration between professionals in the workplace. You will explore the ways in which teaching is delivered and consider classroom behaviour amongst students and how they learn.In English Literature, you will be taught by expert lecturers in the School of Humanities. You will explore and interpret literary texts that will challenge your views, advance your tastes, prompt your creativity, and give you the opportunity to become a versatile graduate. Through a range of activities and assessments, our diverse course will equip you with a vast array of attributes that employers are looking for, including problem solving, creativity, emotional intelligence, and digital literacy.You will examine literature in English from across the world, including Britain, North America and Africa, taking a truly global perspective. This experience will help you to pursue your passions, grow in confidence, and gain a unique set of transferable skills that will be invaluable for your future career in a variety of sectors.

WORK PLACEMENTS

In the School of Social, Political and Global Studies, you may have the opportunity to apply for a placement module to develop your knowledge and skills in professional environments. This may include opportunities to experience teaching and learning in Primary, Secondary and Special Educational Needs (SEN) schools.During this experience, you would observe and assist with classroom activities and develop your practical and professional skills in the company of professionals and learners in different age and development stages. We have a wide range of contacts with local schools in the area where you can gain this valuable hands-on experience in the education sector.Please note: There are limited spaces on this module.In the School of Humanities, you may also have the opportunity to take the second or third-year work placement optional modules. These modules can help you to engage with potential future employers whilst being supported by academic and career advisors to design and complete a programme of work in partnership with a workplace. Alumni have previously taken work placements in museums, schools, charities and archives, enhancing their career prospects upon graduation. In addition to your time at your chosen organisation, you will engage with taught sessions that focus on how to articulate your skillset to an employer and also be encouraged to reflect upon your experiences to identify how you can apply your learning to your studies and beyond.
WORK PLACEMENT YEAR
You may apply for a Work Placement Year in the School of Humanities that allows you to practise your learnings and prepare for employment after university at greater length and in more depth. This will enable you to build confidence and demonstrate your abilities in a professional environment, using the skills you have gained throughout your degree programme. You will be supported with your preparation for your placement with advice on CV writing and cover letters, as well as the chance to attend Q&A workshops to discuss individual experiences with alumni and employers.Alternatively, you may choose to opt for a Work Placement Year in the School of Social, Political and Global Studies between Year 2 and 3. This will allow you to apply your knowledge and practical skills in a relevant workplace environment enabling you to build key skills in communication, teamwork and project management. You will be able to demonstrate your abilities and creative thinking, working with fellow professionals as well as independently. You will be supported by staff in your preparation to apply for a work placement that suits your interests and career prospects.Overall, whichever school you choose to do your work placement year in, this is a valuable character-building experience which will allow you to develop both personally and professionally during your studies and will assist you in your employment after university.

STUDY ABROAD

INTERNATIONAL YEAR OR INTERNATIONAL SEMESTER

Taking advantage of this opportunity between your second and third years of study will enable you to immerse yourself in another culture and see the world from a different perspective.On successful completion of all modules across the year, you will graduate with an enhanced degree title. This can be highly beneficial for your career prospects: through experiencing sustained time within a different country, you will not only grow as an individual, but you will also strengthen your knowledge and understanding of the world and its diversity.Alternatively, you may choose to study abroad for a single semester in your second year which will count towards your second-year grades. Our Global Opportunities team will support you through the process, ensuring you are able to get the most out of your international experience.

  • CISCE / CBSE / West Bengal Class XII: 60% - 90% required depending on course. Subjects Requirements : - Maths with 60% and English with 60% All other State Boards Higher Secondary Certificate (HSC) / Standard Class XII: 65% - 95% required depending on course.Subjects Requirements : - Maths with 70% and English with 60% 2 years of study must have been completed.
  • For IELTS Waiver : CISCE/CBSE Class XII: 70% or above. All other State Boards Class XII (except Punjab or Mohali School Education Board): 75% or above in English, depending on course.Study should be taught in English. Otherwise IELTS is required.
