Program Description

Shape your learning of Archives and Records Management at Liverpool with our three pathway options:1. MARM2. MARM (Digital Pathway)3. MARMI (International Pathway)The Master of Archives and Records Management (MARM) is accredited by the Archives and Records Association as the recognised qualification for archivists and records managers in the UK and Ireland. All the pathways include the content required for professional practice, delivered via compulsory modules shared between all three. This includes digital record-keeping, which is a core component of all modules and all pathways. You’ll gain the knowledge you need to pursue an archives and records career in research, business, government, academia – indeed anywhere that qualified professionals are needed. We’ll teach you to work in a way that provides the accountability and transparency demanded for good governance, effective operating public in an organisational context or which meets the needs of archive users in the wider cultural and heritage environments. There’s a strong practical element and you’ll be attached to the Liverpool University Centre for Archive Studies (LUCAS) which coordinates our research and outreach activities.Teaching takes place in interactive lectures or small-group seminars and workshops as we believe this leads to the best collaboration between students and staff. You can also study this course as a postgraduate diploma (120 credits) over 9 months full-time.Please note that all pathways are open to students of any nationality but all students need to be located in the U.K. None of the pathways is offered by distance learning to students based outside the UK.1. MARMThis pathway is distinctive for including palaeography as a core component, both English for the period 1500-1800 (HIST579) and optional Latin (HIST540), as well as a module looking at the stewardship of physical collections (HIST538).This pathway is available full-time and part-time, both for in-person study and by synchronous online delivery for students unable to travel to Liverpool.2. MARM (Digital Pathway) This pathway offers the opportunity to take a wider range of modules relevant to digital record-keeping as elective options. This pathway is therefore particularly suited to those aiming for a career as a digital archivist or records manager, or no need for palaeography skills. This pathway is available full-time and part-time, for in-person study on campus.3. MARMI (International Pathway)This pathway is intended for overseas students who want to meet the practice requirements of their home countries and who need a masters award to do so. It includes modules specifically designed to develop knowledge of record-keeping internationally, as well as a range of optional modules for students to tailor the programme to their specific needs. This pathway is available full-time for in-person study on campus only.
