Program Description

The MA Classical Music Industry is a unique programme for anyone interested in progressing their career in the music management, the music industry, arts management, or other roles in the public sector (learning and participation, heritage management, music in the community, arts administration). The MA is directly underpinned by real-world experience in the music industry, including a substantial placement with the largest arts employer in the region: the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic.You will be taught by staff with research and wider professional expertise in the classical music industry from within the Department of Music and from guest speakers. Your learning will be enhanced by our performance facilities, such as the Tung Auditorium (opened spring 2022), a 400-seat state-of-the-art music venue geared towards classical music performance; the concert hall supports a lively and diverse programme of live music throughout the year. The RLP’s concert hall (Philharmonic Hall) is just five minutes’ walk away, and hosts hundreds of concerts annually, including those by the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra. Expertise from the RLP’s diverse activities – including its extensive learning and education programme, the In Harmony Liverpool project, and regular work on music and mental health – informs the course at every stage.
The course includes a period of internship with the RLP, in which students undertake a guided placement within the organisation and have the opportunity to become closely familiar with the operation, management and development of a professional symphony orchestra and its wider portfolio of activity. You will enjoy privileged access to concerts throughout your study and meet members of the orchestra and administration team in ways not available to the general public or students on other programmes.As a consequence of the wide range of professional opportunities built into the course you will graduate with enhanced employment prospects relevant to arts management roles. These prospects will be enriched not just by exposure to the best minds of two historic and thriving institutions (the University of Liverpool and the RLP) but by the support we give you to complete a dissertation in your chosen specialist field.

Institute of Popular Music (IPM)

Our Institute of Popular Music (IPM) was the first academic centre created specifically to study popular music – and where better than in the home of the Beatles? It also boasts an enviable archive of donated recorded material.

The Interdisciplinary Centre for Composition and Technology (ICCaT)

The Department of Music is home to ICCaT, which investigates how music composition and sonic artforms intersect with new technology, performance and perception. ICCaT's research is focussed both on musical practice as well as developing technological resources and software-based tools for creative practitioners and analysis

Tung Auditorium

The Tung Auditorium (opened 2022) is a 400-seat, acoustically optimised music performance space. Its artistic programme includes orchestral and choral music, jazz, folk, pop, electro-acoustic and experimental music. It is a high-performance acoustic space that provides an ideal focus for performance activities within the Department of Music; the concert hall includes specialist instruments such as orchestral percussion, two Steinway D pianos and a magnificent double manual harpsichord. The Tung functions as a public-facing space for a diverse programme of concerts throughout the year.

Working in partnership with the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra

We are intrinsically connected to the city, working closely with musical and cultural partners, including the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic. This particular partnership extends across the spectrum of the Department’s activities, with the Orchestra’s musicians making frequent visits to campus to provide activities which include postgraduate composition workshops and specialist performance masterclasses. Liverpool Philharmonic players frequently participate in MMus ensemble assessments.

Strong research culture

Across the department, our research activity has a strong interdisciplinary nature and is concentrated in three cross-cutting areas:
  • Critical and Contextual Approaches
  • Creative Practice
  • Media and Industry Studies.
Research students participate fully in our research activity. They present papers at the department's research seminars, and work as Teaching Assistants within the School (with pedagogical training and support provided). There are also weekly research, career, and teaching seminars for all postgrads.

Other Requirements

  • A first degree award of 2:1 or higher (or its equivalent). There are no restrictions on the discipline of your first degree. For students for whom English is a second language there will be the requirement that they attain a minimum of 6.5 IELTS with no band less than 6.0.
  • For IELTS Waive off , you require 70% and above in English in Standard XII for CBSE/CISCE/WB/Karnataka/Maharashtra/TamilNadu/Andhra Pradesh/Kerala/Telangana/Goa/Delhi/Sikkhim/Gujarat/Meghalaya boards..Three-year Bachelor's degrees like BComs can be accepted, but sometimes the content covered in such degrees does not provide adequate grounding for our more specialised programmes such as MSc Finance.We also accept, as evidence of English language skills, an undergraduate degree from one of the following Indian universities (including affiliated colleges): Anna University Mumbai University Pune University Bangalore University University of Delhi University of Madras Indian Institutes of Management (IIM) Indian Institutes of Technology (IIT)
