Program Description

MRes Advanced Biological Sciences offers you the opportunity to deepen your knowledge, understanding and skills in your chosen biology pathway by taking part in a year-long research project supported by four taught modules. This Master of Research programme is designed for those who want to move on to a career in science, whether in academic research, industry or areas of biomedicine research. Please note this programme is also suitable for intercalating medical students.  The breadth of research in the Institute of Systems, Molecular and Integrative Biology (ISMIB) covers a diverse range of research interests from molecular to systems biology and human health. Researchers in ISMIB use cutting-edge multi-omics technologies to answer important biological and biomedical questions about health and disease. They are interested in how molecules work when integrated into tissues and organisms in healthy individuals, compared with those experiencing health conditions, and working on the discoveries of the new therapeutics to improve current treatments. The programme consists of a 120 credit research project, during which you will work alongside PhD students and full-time researchers as a member of one of our research groups. For the part time programme, students take all taught modules in year one, while the research project is taken across year one and two. For a list of research projects available for the 2023/24 academic year, please view our MRes Advanced Biological Sciences MRes Projects. The research project forms a large part of the degree. Selecting the right project for you is a key decision and we will help you to choose projects relevant to your interests during admission to the programme. You will also be able to choose from a series of taught modules to ensure that you develop the correct academic background and skills to excel in research.Another important component of the programme will be the opportunity for non-native English speakers to take a specially designed module in communication skills. This module is taught by members of our English Language Unit and will be designed to improve your English in a scientific context. Please see www.liv.ac.uk/elu for details. The MRes Advanced Biological Sciences programme has pathways, covering all core areas. The title of your degree award will reflect your pathway of choice:
  • Advanced Biological Sciences (Animal Sciences)
  • Advanced Biological Sciences (Bioinformatics)
  • Advanced Biological Sciences (Biotechnology)
  • Advanced Biological Sciences (Cell Signalling)
  • Advanced Biological Sciences (Chemical Biology)
  • Advanced Biological Sciences (Conservation Biology)
  • Advanced Biological Sciences (Evolution and Behavioural Biology)
  • Advanced Biological Sciences (Food Security)
  • Advanced Biological Sciences (Functional and Comparative Genomics)

Why Institute of Systems, Molecular and Integrative Biology?

Our departments are equipped with the expertise and technology to carry out groundbreaking research, which informs our study programmes

Our current key areas of research include:
  • The biology and chemistry of life at all scales
  • Cellular signalling mechanisms in normal and abnormal conditions
  • Improving the efficacy, safety and understanding of therapeutics in human disease
  • Advancing the molecular understanding of cancer to increase early detection and improve treatment for cancer patients.
Our collaboration with North West Cancer Research and Clatterbridge Cancer Centre is the first time we're integrating discovery sciences with oncology in one research centre. Working across basic and clinical sciences will not only improve our understanding of cancer but also develop new therapies to put into practice in clinics.

Other Requirements

  • MRes pathways have a greater research element than MSc programmes for students who wish to progress to a career in research and as such a good first degree (2:1 Hons or equivalent) in a relevant Biological Sciences subject is required. The normal expectation is that students who have completed an MRes will progress to a PhD degree.
  • For IELTS Waive off , you require 70% and above in English in Standard XII for CBSE/CISCE/WB/Karnataka/Maharashtra/TamilNadu/Andhra Pradesh/Kerala/Telangana/Goa/Delhi/Sikkhim/Gujarat/Meghalaya boards..Three-year Bachelor's degrees like BComs can be accepted, but sometimes the content covered in such degrees does not provide adequate grounding for our more specialised programmes such as MSc Finance. We also accept, as evidence of English language skills, an undergraduate degree from one of the following Indian universities (including affiliated colleges): Anna University Mumbai University Pune University Bangalore University University of Delhi University of Madras Indian Institutes of Management (IIM) Indian Institutes of Technology (IIT)
